Subject: Best locking nuts??
IP: Logged

Message:
After reading Leslie's recent posts regarding her problems with removing her locking wheel nuts, it reminded me of a similar problem I once had on a new Corvette. The Dealer had to chisle those off.

Does anyone have advice on a good brand of locking nuts that won't strip out easily?

Hey Dakaty, I saw your post and was going to
tell you "don't get ones like mine" but you're
way ahead of me! Actually, they aren't that bad,
they just shouldn't be put on with impact
wrenches. I got mine off yesterday with a t-60
torx bit, the rest of them were no problem.

Please remember, there isn't one locking lug nut on the market that a good thief or competent machanic can't remove. Will slow a thief down quite a bit though.

Mcgard makes a complete kit for Dakota's that includes all the lug nuts, one lock per wheel and the necessary key. I got mine from Summit for around $40. I've had my wheels off several times since installing them and have had no problems.

I just sent off my payment for some 20" rims!! So I may order two sets of lock nuts!!! I may get the McGard complete set and get some Gorilla lock nuts.

Does the McGard set come with 24 lug nuts, total? The wheels I am getting have center caps so I will probably need to replace my stock chrome/covered lug nuts with plain ones.

Leslie, what brand do/did you have?

Bill

To be honest, I have no idea. I got them when I
got my tires, I just asked them to put locking
lugs on.

Yes the Mcgard comes with 24 lug nuts total (4 locking and 20 normal). If you don't already have one you'll want to pick up a torque wrench for your rims. There should be torque specs with them.

My rims are used and will likely not have any paper work. What torque do you think is correct. They are Boyds (predecessor of B. Coddingtons) 20" polished 2 piece aluminum.

Thanks

Are all of yours locking lug nuts?

I think that's a good idea with expensive wheels.

Did you get them from W Aldrous (SP?) in Santa Fe Texas with your rims?

Yes, but I may look into different ones. These can be removed with any t-60 bit.
No, the rims didn't come with any lugs (I got the rims from Warren, nice guy!). I bought the lugs where I got my tires.

Dakaty,

I torque mine at 100lbs., but mine are steel not aluminum. Be sure to retorque the wheels after about 50 miles of driving.
