Hey Everyone,

I am looking at buying a new truck. I have looked into everything but a Dakota, and now I think they are really awesome trucks. Could I possibly get a pro and cons list from someone. What are the coolest/most useful things about the truck. What things suck? I would really like to know and I don't want to take a $25,000 hit if you know what I mean. Thanks a lot.

Harv

Brakes suck on the vehicle and the paint is like butter, other than that, everythig else is the best. The Dakota beat the hell out of the Tacoma and S-10 in comfort and 'specially in power when I test drove them around.

If you go look at the reviews at Edmunds or Carpoint, the Dakota is number one with the Tacoma a close second on both of them.

The new '03 Dakota is supposed to have 4-wheel disc-brakes too, which will proably help a lot. Other than that, all I can say is go test drive one! Not everyone is looking for the same thing, the only way to find out is test drive to your heart's content and find that one you want.

Once you've done all that, then tell the dealer you want this one and for invoice and all the accessories on it for wholesale too if he wants to sell it to you, be mean, be fearsome!

I've had no problems with my brakes, but that is a
common complaint. A friend is getting me a great
deal on a set of stainless steel Powerslots.
Unless they have improved them for the new models,
the ball joints really suck. If yours go under
warranty, I would highly suggest that you get a
set of Moogs and ask them to use those. Also, the
catalytic convertors are awful, I am on my third.
However, they are covered under the emissions
warranty for 7 or 8 years, so it won't cost you
anything.
This is still the best vehicle I have ever owned

You can hear a rattling sound coming from under your cab. Also, sometimes it is accompanied by a delightful sulphurous stink. The rattling is caused by the ceramic inside shattering.

Bwahha, easy solution, get rid of the cat!

Get an aftermarket one ($90, but legal), gut (free) the one you have or weld a new pipe in it's place (free-$50). My truck is much happier without it :)

Harv, this is my first truck too and I am very happy with it. I don't know how old you are, but the insurance is *really* nice on it too. That was a huge determining factor for me.

I sum it up like this, pretty much; it's the fastest, cheapest newest model vehicle you can get. What you pay to get a new vehicle with power that can outrun a Prelude, RSX, Celica, you name it, it's very cheap. You have the power equal to that of a small sporty car and the utility and durability of a truck. Not a bad deal I'd say.

Gutting the cat convertor would be best, this way if some STATE person,or Cop looks under the truck ,they will see the cat convertor but wont know it is hollow..A piece of exhaust pipe is dangerous in a way to get caught and a fine. sure the pipe is better but with States having emission checks now days/// well you know.
