Hello All-
Recently I purchased a slightly used (13000 miles) 2000 CC Dakota Sport 4x4 w/ a 4.7 v8. Love IT! Beautiful truck, with good pep. But it developed a knock. Took it to the dealer yesterday and they called me this morning and said the engine has to come out. They believe it to be a bad rod bearing or wrist pin. I understand the rod bearing. What about the wrist pin?? How does a wrist pin cause knocking? From being under-oiled?? does it flow oil?
Also, I see that Mason has had something similiar to this done on his truck (see "Warranty Engine Being Rebuilt!" post); is their anyone else who's had this problem w/ the 4.7, and did the rebuild do the trick???
I want my truck back!!!!

Thanks everybody,

Gary

The mechanic can tell what's loose by dropping the oil pan. Whether this requires an engine removal, I don't know for newer Dakotas, but it's unlikely.

The rod bearings and wrist pins should NOT be bad already unless 1) The engine was revved to red-line (5000 RPM+); 2) The engine was run out of oil; 3) the engine was poorly assembled at the factory.

I hope you tranferred the powertrain warranty. If not, you may be able to take your truck back, go to another dealer, tranfer the warranty, then make a claim a month later at the second dealer.

In any case, if there is no warranty, try to find a good shop. My experiences at dealer have ALWAYS been bad.

Excessive clearance between the wrist pin and the rod would cause a tapping noise. If its bad enough you might even feel a vibration from abnormal piston motion.
