Subject: Acc. It Slices It Dices It's the Dakota!
IP: Logged

Message:
I had an accident this morning going on a back road a lil too fast. I have a nasty habbit of going on on back roads and driving incredibly fast on them in the dark night -- it just usually is. I made the mistake of going on a road that I wasn't familiar with though. I was going probably about...fast enough.. and I slowed down for a corner I saw up ahead, ok, that's fine. I've slowed down and taken corners many times worse than this before. At the end of that streach, the beginning of that corner, something there kicked my tyres loose and I wasn't able to start my turn. I flew straight over a rather large hill *WHAM* and then jumped another smaller hill *THUD-WHOOSH-WHAM*. I was busy keeping the wheels level on the ground and not to kill myself when I tried to miss a small ~12 ft. 8" at the base pine tree. I hit this tree dead on where my passenger headlight is located. It sliced through it like butter! Didn't slow me down enough to even feel the hit, I just saw it blink before me and it was gone into the darkness. It didn't just crack, it sliced it right off and sent it flying over 40ft from that spot. I didn't hit it and push it there either, it flew another direction from me!

I stopped shortly after I had hit the tree after that and assess the damage; my SLT bumper has a good sized dent in it and a small ding above that on the 1/4 panel. The hood and passenger door have a few small scratches and the lower valence is a lil bent. The steering is fine, the suspension is same as new. Everything is fine but those scratches, few dents. No more than $500 in damage really.

So how does the Dakota stand with accidents? You've probably asked yourself this a couple times before, at least once. Well, the answer is VERY DAMN WELL. It's responsive, things do not go haywire and that jump SHOULD have really broken something, anything. I've looked and looked and looked and taken it on bumpy roads. I even had my dealership do a nice favour for me and take a close look under there. Those SLT bumpers are strong as FCK and I was very impressed with how everything held up. If I have to get hit again in a vehicle, I want it to be in my Dakota. This is a vehicle you can feel safe in.

What did ole Mike end up with, well, he has to fix the tree, of course. A couple hundred dollars in damage to the truck, mostly all to a new bumper. I was at the body shop when the HWY Patrol Officer came to the house. My dad had a good talk with him and I was left with a warning -- damn my dad is awesome!

I was also faced with a moral delimma of leaving the scene or not. It's secluded, no one saw or was even around the area to see or hear it. The residents were not home and I could have easily taken off as I found out later, is what most people that do that hit her property. I however, did leave a note with my information. The owner however did want to go through my insurance company for her lil ole tree, that kinda bugged me, but what bigged me more was she called the HighWay Patrol. This is not a good thing! Dammit, all I wanted to do was pay for her sht in cash and forget the thing, but she had to go through with this! It really bothered me that I could have easily gotten a ticket hadn't it been for my dad and his excellent communication skills and being a LEO himself.

My question is though: why, why since I am an honest functioning member of society, I was about to be punished? I havn't even been pulled over prior to this event, I am a decent damn driver, even in adverse and high speed conditions. I leave my info, I accept responsibility, but I am the one about to recieve a high dollar ticket which would royally a$$-fck my insurance rates. Hrmm, good thing it was highway patrol, these guys are pretty cool around here, I'm just damn glad it wasn't a city cop. We should not severly punish those honest ones who accept respnsibility, that is plain wrong. This type of policy is a war against truth and is a promotion for dishonestly! WTF...

This story does not go without a humbled ending, a mother and her three baby birds were killed in a most horrible manner when I hit that tree :(

I too can agree with you on this. A couple weeks ago I did something similar and ran smack into a nice sized palo verde tree. Also thought that my suspension would be messed up but it wasnt. A couple of the branches did destroy my fender. Dented up the hood and scratches the bumper real bad. Getting all those replace right now. But proud of the truck. Cause that tree didnt have a future.

And get this. Why is it that the hood cost 280 and the fender was 500??? Crazy dealerships..

Going faster is just human nature, it will always be there, but I did accept responsibility, I already know I will when I drive. I do drive damn well around town and other people on the road, thus the reason I have never even been pulled over before! I'm guessing we all proably do/have done some sorta hobby we like that's not exactly sane. My problem was it was a new road to me and I usually always travel a road first to get the feel of it and where the danger spots are.

I meant, lets say you go to fast and go off into a ditch, but then you get towed or drive away and not reoport it. Now, if you were to report that, just cause you think it would be honest, you would be giving yourself a ticket. Tell me, why would anyone want to be honest then?

You done well! You did the right thing, like a MAN and a LAW ABIDING Person should do. Leaving the scene and leaving no info is the cowardly thing. As for nasty habits we all have them, high speed secondary roads was one of mine for years till I hit a 2000 # Bremer bull.(In a Nissan KingCab)
As for the statement: anything seem contradictory there, or is it just me??
seems a bit judgemental. Law abiding citizens do sometimes 'GO FASTER than the POSTED speed, Take ILLIGAL rights on RED, Pass in a NO PASSING zone, etc. This is Freuds human nature even for the respectable. GOOD DAY

Thank you for your words Lynn, most people have asked me, "Why didn't you just drive off?" I tell them, "Well, there's sorta this thing called a consience!" Thanks.

No one said it was acceptable -- because it certainly is not --, but it doesn't mean that person should be punished where as a person who is dishonest and runs, will not be.

Yates-in-DE.... How can yo call someone who drive incredibly fast on a dark road a law abiding man?? seems to me that a these are the actions of a wreckless child.

Xplikt... you were not punished for being honest, you were punished for endangering other peoples lives. One of these days you might be driving increibly fast down a road you are not familliar with and hurt or kill someone. What will your conscience say then?? If you want to be the law biding man you were called you will save the fast driving for the track

Karma-nator has it nailed. Let's look at it from another perspective. Did that lady ask you to come sailing through her yard in the middle of the night to rearrange her landscaping? What if she had been sitting out there in the cool night breeze, enjoying the stars, and just happenend to be in your way? What if you'd rammed her house and ended up in her bedroom? You should feel fortunate that you only murdered a tree and a few birds. There's more to being a "good driver" than having quick reflexes and knowing enough to not drive like an idiot when traffic is thick. It's also having common sense no matter what the conditions or who's around. I hope that your maturity catches up with you before you kill someone, and that you learned more from this episode than that your Dad will cover your butt if you get it in a sling. If you were my kid, you'd have taken your lumps, no matter what came down.

Karma, I agree with you %100! Honestly.

I would expect myself to be charged of involuntary manslaughter if I hit someone, but I did not.

Of course it's not the brightest or best thing to do in the world, why would you think I wouldn't know that? I used to think no one was perfect, but obviously people in this post have proved me wrong.

I didn't ask my dad to do that, I was out at the body shop when the officer stopped by. According to most people I've talked to, you usually do not get a ticket when you took the actions I did.

For the record, I wasn't going extreemly fast as though I was in a race in topping a World Speed record. I was just going a bit over the speed limit and hit a spot in the road that gave way to my traction. I think it would have taken my off the road if I was going THE speed limit. People go off there all the time and there aren't any warnings or postings in that area. 65 in a 55 I think...around there.

Man, all you guys who are yelling at xplikt are prolly the same @ssholes who drive 45 in a 55 which is just as dangerous, why do you think they have minimum speed limits on the HWY. The post was about how well the dak stood up under these conditions and you guys had to ruin it with all this bullsh$t. That is the worst thing about every BB, people who have nothing better to do than to rain on someone else's parade.

xplikt, I rearended an Astro van with my Dak at a yield sign, he started to go and then slammed on the brakes because someone pulled out in the road about an 1/8 mile back, I smashed the whole rear of the van in, the doors would not even close. The only thing the Dak suffered was a small cut in the lower SLT bumper. You can't even tell it until you get within a foot of it. And by the way, I didn't get a ticket because it was raining and the officer ruled it unsafe conditions, (the roads fault). I do love these trucks, If DC keeps this quality in their design, I will never buy another make.

01quaddak, it's perfectly fine, the internet is a great place for people to play devil's advocate that would normally not do so in real life. I brought the debate and flame onto myself, but personally, I love it.

intimidator, I am not trying to recruit supporters, not at all. I have no reason to get supporters, do I? Actually, I was looking to get many different uncensored opinions without any limitations. What better place would I get these, than the internet!

You all did a great job! Time to recap:

1) Xplikt drives to fast once in a while and it's a hazard to him and others. (Duh.)

2) Xplikt bought his own vehicle with his money.

3) Xplikt would have taken a $1000 ticket rather than let his dad have known about it. Family dishonour is a lot worse than a meesly ticket.

4) Dakotas do DAMN well in accidents and you can feel safe to drive and hold your kids in them.

5) Xplikt still keeps a record of never being pulled over or any other accident.

6) I found out, the owner of the house was very grateful, because I was the first to leave a note from when I went thru her propety, but then that doesn't mean anything..

7) We all do things dangerous, you just don't always think about how huge of an impact it could be. Ever drive a lil bit fast, just that one day, because you're late for work. Are you lighting fire crackers in your neighboorhood this year? Ever speed up through a yellow light, you know, a lot of people turning left across the street on that yellow get hit from people trying to beat the yellow. Luckily, most of the time the worst doesn't happen, but it always could. Not just to me, but to all you, no one is protected from it. You all commit these acts ever day I bet, take a deeper look at EVERYTHING you do. Simple quick lane changes, everything.

Becareful how quick you are to judge, might happen to you one day.

PS, sorry about my sayin' you were dumb polchartude.

Hey BearHit, I JUST finished Zainoing it the evening before too, how depressing is that. The vehicle was in better than new condition, now, it is not.

I didn't graduate, never said I did. I AM IN school, the 4.0 is only in my cores, not my major, I do not start those 'till next semester. I don't know why it's so hard to believe I work 40+ hours a week, go to school for 11 hours (it's summer sem. right now). A lot of business will work around your school schedule. I know Dish Network in Denver highers many college students and works around their classes.

"when do you go to school?"
monday - thursday

Wednesday I have a 6-10PM class -- ick.

"how did you buy your dak?"

With money. My parents did help out though, in a great way, but not with money. Even when I wanted to put half down on the truck, I had NO credit, and I wasn't able to buy it. My mom however, cosigned for me and I was able to get the truck -- just like that. Their credit rating is at around 800. Her name is apparently on the title because of that and my insurance too, lol.

"P.S. I think you proly just go to school and live w/ DAD."

I live with Mom and Dad and I go to school and go to work.

Now, I get to go to Math class.

I will now also witness for the great POWA of the mighty DAKOTA TRUCK!

The story begins driving along some moderately busy town streets in the sprawling suburbia of AURORA COLORADO

I like to drive my truck...its a 94 V6 Sport Short Bed Regular Cab yadda yadda... a tough truck i thought, but little did I know:

Driving through an intersection, i had been at the front of the line as the light turned green. I gave her some gas, and the lovely growl of the V6 told me we were moving along. I am halfway accross the intersection when i glance to my right and see...

THE UGLY MONSTROSITY of a 1982 dirty, junky old white OLDSMOBILE TANK hurtling towards me at well over the posted speed limit of 35 MILES AN HOUR...oblivious the the glaring RED TRAFFIC LIGHT in front of him

a split second later i hear the horrific SCREECH of his tires as he slams on his brakes...instinctively I gun the motor, knowing then that i was all to late in my reaction...

SCREEEEECH...BLAM! The TANK collides with me, sending my Dak spinning through the rest of the intersection, ending up about 45 degrees short of having spun around almost one and a half complete turns clockwise...as I see the TANK, still going in the same direction it had been, but finally coming to a stop 20 feet or so past the intersection.

My motor was still running--good...i gave it a little gas--we were moving...no nasty noises--good...i pulled over a little into a driveway of some parking lot as not to block traffic...got out and went around to look at the right rear fender

a HUGE dent and scrape...a nick in the wheel rim...an almost impossible to see dent in the tailpipe...my hard tonneau cover popped, the latching rods bent...the bed box slightly skewed

the main impact point must have been just behind or right into that wheel i guessed...anyways tank boy finally pulls up to park next to me...hes an older guy, friendly enough considering the circumstances

CUT TO THE NEXT DAY, BODY SHOP

after the inspection, there was found to be absolutely no damage or distortion of the frame, no irreversable damage to the bed box, and no damage to the suspension or driveline whatsoever...I would need a new taillight, wheel, somehow they repaired the fender, and some work on the tonneau cover latches and the whole bed box would need to be re squared or whatever, and most surprising, the impact had jarred the battery some in its mount so it would have to be wiggled back into position, free oof charge...$1300 dollars for all of that was the estimate, it ended up costing only $800 or so

but anyways the point of this story is the miraculous escape from any real permanent or serious damage to the DAKOTA despite the impact forces involved and the location of the impact. It really is one tough mother.

oh and what happened to the tank? some cosmetic damage to the front end, and i think he had a dent in his radiator...maybe all cars were so tough back in the old days ^_^
