Howdy,

I ordered the amplified from www.nexxon.com. I got it for 399. I think it is worth it for the hidaway factor for the amp and subs. I figured I would need to buy the amp $300-400 2subs $ 50-120 and enclosure $50-150. sooo That is as much at the MTX without hide away.

side note I will post how that new amplified box sounds. New design Talked to MTX

subs run at .7 ohm and the amp runs at .4 ohm. They specially designed the box. It is a 100 watt amp soo it should just enrichen the sound like I want insteed my couisn 200 miles away to hear it tooo.

also take a look at these posting----subbox?--2001 Dakota Speakers

I also have the thunderform, but I ordered without the amp. I also didn't find the good deal at the website mentioned by y22man. I modified my thunderform to work with an amp I already have. The thunderform is wired in parallel to run in mono. My amp is to powerful to run the MTX speakers this way, so I have each speaker wired to the amp for stereo sound. The amp is a 200 watt rms x 2 channel. It sound great. I can vary my crossover for anything from booming bass for rap (that's what my girlfriend likes) or mildly accent the lower tones of a country ballad. The bass response is very tight and accurate. The sound is very crisp, and you don't get the slushy sound you sometimes think of with 10" subs mounted in a car trunk. I have also replaced my factory speakers and installed a 4 channel amp to drive them, so the subs were an almost must have.

Installation wasn't bad. If you get the amplified version, it will be very easy, just power, remote turn on, inputs, and ground. The directions that come with the thunderform are pretty good, if you are capable of any basic mechanical work you will be ok installing the thunderform. The only problem I had was I broke one push pin that holds on the plastic interior trim, and I had to fight geting one of the new bolts for the thunderform started in its hole. Overall not bad for installation. I have heard that there is a fit issue with the 2001 trucks, but I have a 2000 and everything went fine. I'm not entirely certain what the 2001 change was.

I want the Thunderform, but i would like to see the diagrams before I spend the money.

ChrisC,
The factory deck does not have pre-amp outputs. I took mine out of the dash the other day to check. The speakers are connected with those old clips, not RCA connections which means you would probably have to splice the thunderforms into these somehow.
Anybody have any experience with this?

Also, I was told that the MTX 6000 were not that good for 10" speakers. I was told to go with JL or Rockford. But I do not have any experience with these.

Well, the install is mostly complete except that I have had problems with the thunderform fitting correctly in the back. The back seems to sit a bit higher than it should and the seat brackets rub on the box leaving the front of the seat to sit a few inches off the speaker box. The rear seats are also now sitting at about a 30 degree slant because the box is a bit higher. This sucks.

On the other hand, the thunderforms sound real good with the RF subs and the Sony amp which is bridged to give me 760 watts. I can now turn my bass down on my stereo and turn it up on my amp to separate my high and lows. This allows me to turn the volume all the way up and now get any distortion:)

Same truck as yours Jay except its an auto 4x4.

I found out today that the bracket holding the rear seat to the body is adjustable so that you can raise the seat up about 1/4". This helps the seat to sit almost flush with the box but is still about 1/2" higher in the front.

If you only have one set of preamps.....
Most good amps have preamp output jacks so you can use those to run multiple amps
You won't have any fader or individual sub control
This isn't that big of a deal because you can set the amps to different levelsto get the mix that you want.

Also after talking to the MTX guy again.. I think im going with just the box. He told me the subs are "ok" if you just want an "ok system, but you can always buy them for 100 or 150 later... and that he himself would not buy them, but go with the 8000 series or actually Kickers or just a better quality... SO its up to you... If he wont buy them and he works for them.. Im not gonna get them.

RE: Amped MTX thunderforms
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok,
I bought the Amped Version loaded with the subs from Crutchfield 2 weeks ago. Everything is installed now and I'm almost satisfied. The MTX's sold in the amped box are wired to present a .7 ohm load to the built in amp. It has very basic gain and a crossover built in to the box. I disagree that these are "cheaper MTX's" than the 6000's, they ARE 6000's that are designed to present a .7 ohm load to a very efficient amplifier.

I had two Fosgate Punch Pro 15's in my last truck, so my expectations are hard to meet with 10's in ANY fashion. I feel the box does a good job for what it is.

The fundemental problem here is Air space, and that's it. Subwoofers need specific amounts of airspace in Cubic Feet that is determined by the sub type. We are working with a VERY small amount of space with this box, but you get to keep your back seats. If there is anyone out there who is expecting to get the same quality of Bass out of this enclosure as a custom box loaded with 10's you will be disapointed. IMHO, the amped box works well for what it is and the space compromise we are working with.

The only alternative is to either build a box to sit on the back seat or completely remove the rear seats and build a serious box, I chose to keep it low profile as I have competed in the past and now just want good quality sound in a functional truck.

I also might mention that the Amped version has speaker level inputs AND line level RCA inputs. This is nice for those folks who don't want to replace thier factory head unit.

All in all I would rather have some better bass, however this is a good compromise for me.

My setup consists of the following:
Kenwood Z828 CD/MP3 Player 3 4.5V RCA outputs
Thunderform MTX 6000 series Amped box
MB Quart Componets in the front door's w/Comp x-overs
Polk Audio 6.5" Coax's in the rear for back fill
PPI PC450 to drive the fronts and rears

Sounds pretty damn good.

Well I just could not wait!

I tore it all apart last night. It really was not that hard to install although it did take about 3 hours. I was being careful not to break any plastic clips.

MTX has very good instructions that do come with the box. and it came with a 10 gauge power wire, 10 gauge ground and a remote wire. The ground and remote was about 2-3 feet long. Fuse and all the connectors for the wires. GOOD JOB MTX!

As you know I have the amp version the rf gain and crossover are simple to use. The amp is ample enough as well.

I run the rf gain at about 65-70% and the cross over is bearly on. About 15%

It sounds good. I got it to enrichen the sound and it sounds very nice.

I have the Aiwa mp3 player matched with 4 pioneer ts or tp something. Along with the thunderform. Damn it is nice. With that set up you have a great all around sound.

I don't know who jonas talked to or where you are hearing the amped version suck. Minde does not suck whatsoever.

I also have a hard time thinking that a MTX rep would say that due to retail is almost 200 bucks more. he would be looking for more money. Besides witch I talked to the rocky mtn dealer and he said he has not seen any problem WHEN they are installed properly. You can blow any sub when they are not adjusted properly.

I disagree with what jonas said. if you look up. if you are looking for compitition sound you should not go for a box like this anyways. I have one. It rocks. No problems. The amp is plety good. If you look at my previous post. The amp is plenty I am not working it at all. I have a lot of room to adjust.

anyone else have the amped ver and what do they think????

Ok, Im doing it. Ill be taking orders(money) tommorrow. Due to lots of advice and thought however I will only be doing the unloaded boxes. The price will be $195.00 (that includes shipping)and will be shipped to your door. Here is the "thought", and no offense to anyone who wants and/or has the loaded box. I was told that the amped version often has lots of problems, and next Ive never heard the subs that come in the boxes and I dont want to be limited to midgrade MTX subs, and I dont want to buy subs twice. I would rather get the box and then go listen to subs and buy the ones I want! If you want the MTX you can always buy them later for just about the same price. So Im taking orders for the unloaded boxes starting tommorrow. You need to email me, pay me through paypal, I will send the money in one lump sum,and send it to the distributor.

AGAIN; email me if you want in this deal!!!
