Message: My son has an 02 Dakota Quad Cab SLT AWD. It gets terrible gas mileage (like 10 mph). It feels like its struggling, that free flowing when you are going down the road. Could it be stuck in 4hi? Any other ideas on what could be wrong with it?
Message: AWD is great and should not change MPG at all. Only makes tight turns more difficult as all 4WD do. CV shafts and everything all move anyway wether in 2 or 4wd. However, I think you are all mistaken about the transfercase. The 242 is a five position transfercase with 2wd, 4HI partime, 4HI fulltime, N, 4 low. The newer AWD option trucks use a NV 246 same as Jeep has used and has 4HI, N, 4 low.
