to ck the solenoid on the starter, connect a jumper lead between the battery (positive side and the ignition switch terminal (the small terminal on the solenoid. if the starter motor now operates, the solenoid is ok and the problem is in the ignition switch, neutral start switch or in the wiring. hope this helps.

So in theory If I wanted to put a push button start on my truck (like a race car) all I have to do is install a button that when pressed puts 12V to the ignition switch terminal on the starter with the key in the on position of course

Im dealing with the exact same problem,on a 88 4x4 , with TBI Ive replaced everything from the module to what I heard was the most notorius culprit of this problem " The Auto-Shutdown Relay" Now, after I replaced that it did start again ,for 1 day now It wont start ,and Im back to little or no spark .Also replaced the coil today no change. All thats left is the pickup coil in the distributor, What do you think guys ,any help would be greatly apprec. Mike

I've seen a similar problem with two late model Chryslers; a '98 Jeep Wrangler and a '97 Ram 2500. Sometimes nothing at all would happen when you turn the key (I think all the other electrical WOULD work just fine). A lot, if not all, dealers install a security device while they keep the vehicle at the dealer. They are all similar (one brand is the Pro-Lock). This is a starter kill that leads to a plug usually under or near the steering column (forgive me if I overexplain). There is a chip key that goes in that plug to start the vehicle. It seems it has become common practice to simply break the chip key off in the plug, rather than uninstall the system. If that works loose a little, you have a problem starting the vehicle sometimes. Other times its fine. Check to see if your truck has that plug, you could have the same problem.

I just recently had a problem with my 94 Dak 5.2 2wd not starting. I checked for spark at the ignition coil none then I was told to see if the check engine light would come on with the ignition switch in the on position it didn't then I had to check pin location 3 on the 60 pin connector to the PCM to see if there was 12 volts there. none there was 12v to the ASD. They both run off the same power supply wire. Anyway in the 94 95 year there is a splice in the hot line leading to both of these. that connection is commonly known to corrode. Untape your wire harness right below the relay box there you will see the connection check for broken connections there.

Thanks for the info. I pulled the tape off the wires (they basically fell off) and sure enough there is this splice that was green as all get out. Cut the junk off spliced them all back together and the truck started right up. Sutre beats having it towed to a garage. Thanks again for the info.
