I had 150,000 miles on my ranger 4.0 L. Ex Cab, jet chip, Gibson cat back, K & N drop in filter.
But my kids are grown and I need a 4 Door, tested fords sport trac. What a dog! It weighs in 4450 lbs. has the same engine as my 3000 LB ranger, turns like a slug and has no torque. (And if you really want to know how I feel, I really like fords!) I’m driving home from work and see this truck coming up from behind and think that is a nice looking truck, !! DAKOTA !! To make a long story shorter (too late for short) Drove one, bought one, Love it more than when I bought it :POWER, LOOKS, FAST, COMFORTABLE. DAKOTA !

I was going to trade my 87 nissan 4x4 in for a new tacoma but after they told me they would give me book value for it on the phone ($2500) and when I got their they told me $500 I said F--- them my neighbor's girlfriend works for dodge (sales person) so I went down to talk to her, I had looked at the dakotas before and like the V8, plus the dodge dealer ended up giving me $3500 for the nissan plus a $2000 rebate. As for mileage my V6 nissan with 33's and 4.62 gears stock no OD was getting about 9-10 MPG so the V8 dakota getting 15.5MPG ( at over 90MPH daily) is pretty damn good! My dakota- 01 4x4 cc IB 4.7 auto 3.55's flowmaster cat back, custom intake with K&N. 22,000 miles no problems so far.

I have to agree...the Dakota are a nice looking truck. I test drove alot of Fords before deciding on my Dakota.

The Rangers were too small. The F150s I drove I did not like. I test drove a 1500 before I decided the truck was too big. Sitting on the lot was a Red and Blue Dak. I test drove them both. Decided I liked the Flame Red more than the Blue one. Both trucks were CC's and both 4 by 4.

I do like this truck...and for a V6, it does have some power.

ASide from the problems...i wouldn't get rid of the truck now.

Let's see:
The ride quality
The options
The price
The dealership
The awesome looks
The V-8!

Overall, it was the best truck for the money, hands down!
I test drove GMC's, Taco's and Fords and they were either outrageously priced or too damn big for my needs!

I don't like the new Ford vehicles. I think they look cheap and ugly. I was originally going to buy a new Tacoma PreRunner, but the sales guys at the Toyota Dealership ignored me. (I even cranked the stereo and honker the horn inside the showroom) I drove across the street to check out the Dakotas. Here are the reasons I bought my Dakota 4 months before I had planned on purchasing:

1. Wanted a truck.
2. Dakota look awesome!
3. I didn't need a full-size.
4. The Dakota fit me well. (Not cramped like Toyota or Chevy)
5. The SXT had the options I wanted/needed.
6. I don't race or off-road. (V6 was fine for me)
7. $1500 Rebate
8. 7 Year/100,000 mile warranty
9. Dealer gave me $1000 over trade-in value on my car to pay off the balance of my loan.
10. The dealer dropped the price of the Dakota below invoice.
11. I look good in it. =)

By the way, I walked into that Toyota dealership a couple of months after I picked up my Dakota and thanked the Sales Manager for making my decision easier and for pointing me to a great truck. Ahh... felt good.

We did alot of research on the Web before buying our Quad Cab. We looked at the RAM 1500 and it did't have the leg room in the back. The full size trucks were all to big for the parking lot manuevers. The Ford F-150 crew cab was listed as $7,000 more for MSRP. The GMC Sierra 1500 didn't have four doors in teh extended cab at that time and still has less leg room in the rear seat. The Chevy 1500HD crew cab had the same problem as teh Ford F-150 crew cab, high priced, and only came in automatic trans with a huge engine. All the Toyotas and the Nissan were lacking in width and legrrom in the back and the rear seat backs were VERTICAL. The Toyota has been reported to have head gasket problems on their V-6. We had a front wheel bearing fail at 30,000. I just replaced the shocks with Edelbrock Performer IAS shocks... Other than that we have had no problems. Well... The plugs were quite worn at 30,000... But Harlow Wilcox can recomend a fix for that <GRIN>. Our gas mileage has averaged 19MPG since we bought it and we have gotten 23.5MPG on the highway at 70MPH. Our Mazda MPV minivan got 20 on a good day and 16 most of the time with the wimpy 3.0L V6. Nope... can't complain.

While stationed out in southern California, my one-wheel drive Ranger served its purpose, but living back out in the mountainous Northwest, it was found lacking in many areas.

I spent months debating between getting a car as a second vehicle or straight up replacing my truck. In the end, I knew that I have been & will always be a truck person.

I started looking at other Rangers, but they just didn't have the cab space I wanted. That led me to the Nissan Crew Cab. The naturally aspirated version just did not have the pep I wanted, and no dealership knew when/if they were going to see the supercharged version.

Then it happened. I was coming home from work one day, and noticed that the Dodge dealership had re-arranged their lot again. A shiny new, black, Quad Cab Dakota was on the ramp in the front of their lot. After doing a couple days worth of online research, I got a friend to go test drive one that weekend.

1.)It met the interior space requirements. Hell, it has more back seat room than most 4-door cars!!
2.) With Dodge's 5.9L Magnum, it has enough power in it to pull whatever toys I should happen to buy, and more than enough pep to easily pass the slow movers on the highway.
3.) And, it is compact enough to make it parking lot friendly...unlike a full-sized Crew Cab.

Heres why I am buying a Dakota...
IP: Logged

Message:
I am going to buy a Dakota Quad Cab in about two months. I have driven EVERYTHING that is truck in America and here is why I am NOT buying these trucks:

Nissan Frontier: Too much plastic; ugly front end; Cheap-feeling interior; small back seat; has 70 less HP than a V-8 Dakota but gets only 1mpg better mileage?

Toyota Tacoma: Horribly overpriced; uncomfortable seats; complicated engine; interior is too NARROW; overly bouncy ride

Toyota Tundra: high price tag; cheap-feeling unattractive interior; small back seat; bad gas mileage for its size; put a decent-sized rear seat in this truck and I might feel differently about it, but I could not get past the small back seat - its a joke and typical Toyota...SMALL!

Ford Ranger: once again, Ford does not offer a Ranger in crew cab configuration, so I did not even look at another extended cab Ranger. Too bad - my 91 Ranger is a good truck...just too small for my needs right now.

Ford F-150: Too big; eats too much gas (nice truck, though)

Ford Explorer Sport Trac: Not enough room to make it a good pick-up, not enough room inside to make it a good SUV...what is this thing really good for? Gas mileage is on par with a 4.7 Dakota, yet is has none of the Dakota's get-up-and-go; plastic bumpers and all that gray stuff looks cheap like the Chevy Avalanche and wont hold up in an accident; higher priced than most crew cab trucks; I just don't get the point of this vehicle from day-1 of it's debut!

Dodge Ram: read the Ford F-150 review

Chevy Silverado: read the F-150 review...I don't want a full sized truck...never did!

Chevy S-10 Crew Cab: Ugly old design that they NEVER change; small bed, small backseats that don't fold out of the way; squeaky and rattly on test drive...and its NEW! (no wonder they're getting rid of this worthless old design...I am sure they're sick of Ford Ranger kicking it's butt in sales since 1983, too)

Chevy Avalanche: big and ugly; cheap plastic grey stuff all over the bottom looks awful and will probably turn whitish and fade in the Texas sun in a few years and look horrible; can someone explain to me the greatness of that convertable bed/rear window thingy? - looks like a worthless gimmick to me; eates too much gas; too expensive as well.

GMC Sierra: a Chevy Silverado with a different grille and higher price tag - the Chevy was not appealing to me as it was, so a different grille and bigger price tag did not help!

GMC Sonoma: Uhh...this is a Chevy S-10 Crew Cab with an all-plastic front bumper and a higher price tag....why?

These are reasons why I did not go for the competition. The Dakota was the obvious choice.

The Dakota Quad Cab: bigger interior than mini-trucks and Tundra; priced like Ford ranger extended cab; V-8 that is not available in mini-trucks; will pull trailers like a full size truck; will fit in the garage, unlike full-sized trucks; better warranty than other makers, without paying extra for it.

There are my reasons...and believe ne...I looked around!
