Daks are good for towing, throwin' junk in the bed, street racin', and my girlfriend loves the look. If you don't need any of those things, a subaru might be a better fit for you. If you need to get a yota, pick up the lx470 and not that bubble-car of an rx300. Both of my buddies bought yotas recently, one bought a 2000 LX470 and one a new rx300. The 300 is pretty lame (hope no one here has one but a loaded subaru outperformed in my opinion. Even with the problems on my quad cab, I wouldn't have dumped the $29K into an rx300.

Just an FYI if you're really looking to buy and you're not a 15 year old thinking you might be able to afford one.

Later BuyA...(waving as the dak pulls out of the garage and smokes BuyA's and his daddy's lexus. ; ))

It sounds like Daks are good for BEING TOWED...that's a joke, son...I have 130 miles on my Dak, and I'm afraid to drive the freakin' thing after listening to everyone else on here. It sounds like Russian mopeds have better trannys in them than what Chrysler tries to peddle.

Dad, I'm afraid to drive it hard as well. I don't want it to break. If the general populous wants a truck with looks, power, acceleration, versatility, then the only idea I can offer is to buy a dakota but not walk out without an extended warranty.
In all honesty, I'd be less frustrated with my truck if I had a decent dealer locally. But I don't.
I'll post what the dealer says about my list o' problems.

Thanks,
YJ

Blckdak, who do you use? Which team?

The truck's at Lynnwood Dodge. They've been working on the problems all day and will keep it for another day or two. Crossin' my fingers. Lynnwood Dodge has been great to me. I just wish they weren't so far from Redmond.

I'll let you know of the diagnosis.

Wanted to give you guys an update.

The loud creaking from the truck when twisting, looks like it was coming from the rear leaf springs. There is a TSB out for them that adds some kind of new clamp at the front and rear of both springs.

After the tranny service and flash, the 45RFE automatic tranny is shifting much stronger and not shifting as often. Feels pretty good, not as smoothly as my jeep's tranny with 140K on it, but much better than it had been.

Rough engine idle, they couldn't find anything but it doesn't seem to be doing it as much. Maybe something to do with the tranny?

The vibration in the steering wheel was caused by a section of the steering column. There's a tsb out for that as well. Have to take it back in when the part comes in.

The AC seems to be low on freon, (if they're still using that), about every 15K. They can't find any leaks. Wierd.

The front-end clunk doesn't seem to be fixed. They replaced a bunch of bushings and such. Seemed to tighten things a bit in the front end, but the odd clunk still exists when I come around a corner that's a bit uneven or bumpy.

The rear diff grinding seems to have gone away. Kind of strange that the grinding would last about 36 hours, one day after I get it serviced by Dodge of Hellvue (Bellevue) but then goes away. They added two of the limited slip additives so who knows. It's gone now and Lynnwood dodge couldn't hear anything but added a bit more of the additive.

So far, great service from Lynnwood Dodge. Someone there accidently backed it into a picnic bench, so there's a new scratch and I had to wipe that off the paint. Oh well, I'm willing to deal with that kind of stuff if I get decent service. (Hope someone from Bellevue Dodge is listening???)

I'll let you guys know if I find out anything else on the front-end, AC, and steering column.

Number I got from Lynnwood Dodge, is supposed to be a direct number to a person for Dodge/Chrysler. It's 1-800-992-1997 just in case anyone wants it.

This was all for a 2K QC 4x4 Sport 4.7 45RFE(AUTO) 3.92lsd .

Thanks again, guys for all of your input. Really appreciate the vast knowledge-base.

YJ

Oh, and one more funny thing I wanted to share was that when I had dropped my dak off at Dodge of Bellevue for the original servicing, a couple was working with a salesman to buy a new extended cab dakota 4x4. As one of them was sitting with the salesman, to work out some numbers, I told the other of all of the repeat problems with my truck and how tough it was to get decent dealership help locally. Needless to say she was thankful. Then I saw them abruptly walking out, with the salesman completely dumbfounded as I was 'running' to my ride home that had just shown up. ; )

Ah..good times...good times...

I'll never take my truck to Lynnwood Dodge, I bought my 1st truck there and the good 'ol service dept. literaly broke my enngine, at the time was the 318. VERY long story and Mr. Jack Carrol didn't want anything to do with me plus I had proof that his tech's F'd up. I guess YJ we are opposite on which dealer is good though thats ok. Im on the Blue team over at DOB and great work so far, she know's that Im very particular about my truck & that Im also going to school to be an auto tech.

As an addition to the ongoing ATF post I would like to add the following for all Dakota owners and those of you who may own additional vehicles which are not Dodge Dakotas:

AMSOIL Synthetic ATF provides outstanding high and low temperature performance and oxidation stability. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF also improves fuel efficiency, reduces transmission temperatures and increases equipment life. The service life of the universal AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is up to five times the service life of conventional ATFs.

Since 1999, due to the special requirements of their automatic transmissions, Chrysler has recommended a unique ATF+4 formulation. In addition, Chrysler has been recommending ATF+4 for all previous makes and models of Chrysler Corporation vehicles. The new AMSOIL Synthetic ATF exceeds the performance specifications for Chrysler ATF+, +2, +3, and +4 as well as MS-7176 A, B, C, D, & E; MS-9602 A, B, & C. as well as Ford Mercon or General Motors Dexron III applications. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is available in quarts, quart cases, twin packs, 30-gallon and 55-gallon drums.

I might have to give the blue team a try. I've tried Red and Gold. They both sucked somethin' terrible.

Do you remember who you went through at the service department of Lynnwood Dodge? Please let me know so I never go through him.

Thanks,
YJ

It was 3yrs ago so I don't remeber his name. Something about being the Svc. Mgr son though seems to stick in my mind being the svc writer, but not sure. If the Techs are set up in the color coded teams (red, blue, green etc..) maybe blue is the best. Later

hey yj,

i had to take my dak into bellevue last year to get the clutch fan replaced (thing locked up and ate all my hp). the service advisor that helped me out there was Josh Lane and he did a good job gave me no hassle and had the job done early...

of course i wouldn't buy my rig there- drove to yakima and got my baby for about 7500 less than good ol dodge of bellevue was asking (regional markup). but for warranty work they seem to be fine.....

Huh. Josh Lane took a look at my truck a couple of times. First time, he had his mechanics do a couple of things, then returned the truck to me with a couple of nice scratches and a few of the same problems. Thought I'd give it a second shot, got the truck back, not all fixed, with the hood not completely latched. It looked like it was, but I found out while on the freeway doin' 65. Watchin' it bounce up and down made me feel like the secondary latch was going to let go so I ended up on the side of the freeway. Gotta love it. I asked Josh Lane and Dodge of Bellevue what the difference between ATF+3 and ATF+4 mopar tranny fluid was and he told me that ATF+4 was fully synthetic. Christ. Got my truck back recently after he did a differential fluid change. Pretty sure his mechanics forgot the lsd additive, which I specifically mentioned. Glad you're doin' alright with them. I just wish I was. Lynnwood Dodge (Terry Moen) has been pretty good to me, so I'm staying there. (Until they mess a couple of things up.) ; ) Ahhhh, the love of automobiles. Sometimes it seems that the service just isn't there unless you buy a porsche. ; )

Newbie, red blue green may be specific to Dodge of Bellevue Service department. They have themselves divided into teams (colors). Red was Josh Lane. I think they do this so one set of mechanics can look at your car. Well, at least as long as they're there. Or in my case, the same guys can keep screwin' something up.

Yep, the Bellevue markup sucked. At the time, I think I paid about 3 grand too much.

Well, ya live and learn. ; )

Dakota Owners,

A lot of you are asking on other threads about transmmission fluid and gear lube. This is one of the best threads if you go back and begin with the original post. Towards the end (as always) the topic began to shift.

Well, I had my 45RFE auto tranny serviced at the dealer. (Gave me a good deal). Made sure they put the new ATF+4 and reflashed to the latest version. Tranny pulled stronger and felt much better....for a while. Now it 'skips' sometimes even slips, for an instant, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. On occasion when slowing down, the tranny will decide not to wind down and provide a nice hard 'thump' when beginning to accelerate soon after. Christ, this tranny is a POS. I better trade this sucker in for a lifted Accord or something. ; )
