Subject: Tranny and Rear End Fluids?
IP: Logged

Message:
The manual says a 75-90 for the rear end, and ONLY the Dodge fluid for the 5spd manual.

I always use Mobil 1 in my 4.7. I"d like a synthetic in the tranny and Rear end.

Please advise on what syn. that is correct for both. Thanks

Well, Ok, BUT,

Your sig says all possible fluids are AMsoil, and you DON'T have a 5-spd.

I KNOW you can use synthetics.

Which one for my 5spd, and my LSD Rear end.

Thanks,

I use Red Line 75-90 in my rear end - nice because you don't need to add any limited slip modifier. And I'm running their MTL in my tranny - it's fine for the NV3500 and doesn't contain any sulphur.

Dak owners ... Don't shoot me (the Amsoil Sponsor) for posting, just trying to help without sounding like a commercial.
-------------------------------------------------
Helpful Differential Recommendations:

-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives. If you choose a different manufacturer than Amsoil ... fine by me, just offering my services.

-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.

Synthetics provide the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even extreme-pressure conditions. Stays fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting.
----------------------
Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 is excellent for use in passenger cars and trucks requiring a GL-5 gear lube, including those with limited slip differentials.

If you would like a free catalog you can reach me thru the "billboard ad" on the home page.

AMSOIL PRICING (May 2002)
Series 2000 75w-90 $9.20 Qt. / 75w-140 $12.05 Qt. retail.(preferred customer $7.20 / $9.35 respectively). You can become a preferred customer for $20 per year and $10 for a 6 month trial and receive up to 25% off retail pricing.

I "believe" that GM charges over $13.00 for a quart for Goodwrench Synthetic 75w-90 GL-5 gear lube.

I am a personal friend of Mark Hryckiewicz and work at the same company at his 9-5 day job. Ask him if I am a "knowledgeable good guy" or just a Spamsoil crud. :-)

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Which transmission is it equiped with?

From 1997 to 2001 there were various transmissions offered, i.e. NV1500, NV3500, NV5600, etc.

It has been my personal experience that a GL-5 rated Mobil synthetic is bad news for the NV3500. It is corrosive to the syncro's. Go with a GL-4 rated synthetic in the tranny.
A GL-5 rated synthetic is best for the nonLSD rear end. I don't know what's best for the LSD.

Texas Todd,

As to whether you should use 75w-90 or 75w-140, personally I would use the synthetic 75w-90 since synthetic 75w-90 will perform above and beyond the recommended petroleum 75w-90. Also your catamaran will have a lower drag than a gooseneck trailer, etc.

I have Freightliner customers driving Class 8 Tractor Trailor Trucks using 75w-90 synthetic gear lube in their difs. Tuff enough for them ... Tuff enough for me.

Did you have any further questions regarding transmission lubricants? AMSOIL HDD 5w-30 in the NV3500 - it is the PREMIUM Amsoil 5w-30 because it is designed for heavy-duty applications.

Hope this helps.

Ron,
Gearlube ratings have nothing to do with viscosity's. The main difference is it's additive package. A GL 4 has anti-wear additives in it where the GL 5 has extreme pressure additives. There are certain applications where you must use a GL 4 instead of the GL 5 because the extreme pressure additives will chemically eat the yellow metals (brass bushings and syncros) at
certain operating temperatures. The GL 5 is a stronger product and can be used in most applications. To give you a rough idea of viscosity's comparisons, a 90 weight gearlube has the same consistency of a 50 motor oil.

In an ongoing effort to keep all Dakota owners informed and as an addition to the ongoing ATF post I would like to add the following for all Dakota owners and those of you who may own additional vehicles which are not Dodge Dakotas:

AMSOIL Synthetic ATF provides outstanding high and low temperature performance and oxidation stability. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF also improves fuel efficiency, reduces transmission temperatures and increases equipment life. The service life of the universal AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is up to five times the service life of conventional ATFs.

Since 1999, due to the special requirements of their automatic transmissions, Chrysler has recommended a unique ATF+4 formulation. In addition, Chrysler has been recommending ATF+4 for all previous makes and models of Chrysler Corporation vehicles. The new AMSOIL Synthetic ATF exceeds the performance specifications for Chrysler ATF+, +2, +3, and +4 as well as MS-7176 A, B, C, D, & E; MS-9602 A, B, & C. as well as Ford Mercon or General Motors Dexron III applications. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is available in quarts, quart cases, twin packs, 30-gallon and 55-gallon drums.

The recommended oil is a 5w-30 synthetic believe it or not, therefore I use the AMSOIL HDD 5w-30 Series 3000 Diesel Engine Oil which is the same oil that we use in my Dad's NEW HOLLAND TC-33 4X4 Utility Tractor.
However you may use any high quality PAO based 5w-30 synthetic oil but I will always keep AMSOIL in my companys equipment.

Art,
To answer your question YES!,
and I am also using it in a Borg Warner T-10 overdrive transmissin (I own both Chevy and Dodge) and it works well.
You can also use the Amsoil 5w-30 and or the 10w-30 which is less expensive than the HDD 5w-30 but the reason that I use that(HDD 5w-30) is because we always have plenty of that around the shop and Amsoil actually recommends it in their cross reference guide also.
Whatever you decide to use in your transmission or rear axle just be sure and drain it while it is at operating temperature so that most all of the contaminants will be drained out also.
