Subject: Brake job problem

Message:
I am doing what appears to be a routine brake job on my ‘98 Durango. But one of the caliper bolts/pins had a bit more resistance coming out than the other 3 bolts.

I did not think much of at first, but when I went to re-assemble the caliper, I noticed that that suspect thread was stripped… I have heard of it on this board before and I can see why it is likely to strip (you need to pre-load the brake pad spring and that puts extra off-center loads on the tread as you are starting it).

I thought there was going to be an easy solution. Local auto parts store had new bolts in stock. And the tread in the hub seemed to be OK. That is until I put everything back together and tried to torque it down… It would “skip” at 10ftLb of torque… So that thread was also bad :(.

Here is my question, I am going to Hellicoil the hub thread, but I can’t figure out what size thread it is.

It measures .348” in Diameter (which I guess is closest to 3/8”). But the pitch just does not make sense, it appears to be 20 and no-one makes 3/8-20 thread…

It might be, tough to find, 3/8-18 but I am not 100% sure. So before I go and spend $35 on this Hellicoil kit, I was wondering if anyone knows the correct size for that thread.

Thanks,
Leon

The female threaded part is in the spindle casting... That srew/pin goes through the caliper.

So that would not help...

It Sounds like a Metric bolt I don't have the conversion tables at home but if you search the web (for metric conversion)I think you will find that it is something like a 8 mm x 1 mm bolt.

Hey Leon...

I know this is an ancient thread....but...

Did the m9x1.25 end up working for you?? Where did you find the helicoil kit for that size??

Having same problem here..only I am dealing with a problem where the dealer stripeped my threads years back and the helicoil they used finally failed....Need to replace it....

Hopefully it will replace ok...if not, I am screwed...

Boy, this is an old thread :).

But yes, the M9 Helicoil kit worked just fine. I was about to order it from an industrial supply place for $45, when one of the members on the Durango board sold me his old kit at some discount.

If you want, I can look up the part number from this kit.

I see this was an oldie dug up and just wanted to add that I have used Helicoils and they work, but next time (and I kinda hope there isn't one, but there always is!) check out TIME-SERT. I am quite sure they have a webpage if you look at google.com. THey are a threaded collar that I have used and I like them much better then the heli's. Worth a look next time.
Hope this helps :-)

I will check out the timeserts.....The heli that was in there failed, so I dont even know if anotehr will work...I found a kit locally (via phone) at a pep boys for the helicoil in the m9 size.....$30 (ouch).

But maybe the timeserts are a better move???

Thanks for confirming the size!! The helicoil lasted about 7-8 years....not sure, like I said, if there are enough threads still in there to grab onto....and I hate to spend $30 for ONE repair...but then again, there may be more down the road...

Thanks to you both!

Well, problem solved...

The M9x1.25 was the right size helicoil kit luckily and I found one at a pep boys (no one else within 3o miles had them -- very odd size apparantly--thanks Dodge) and it went in easy.....All back together....

I'm doing this brake repair for my buddy and I found the Helicoil at Pep Boys like was said, but I need to find 2 pins. Does anyone know there to get them and a part number? The dodge dealer said us to NAPA, but the parts from NAPA do not seem to fit. The ones that work (right side of car has a star pattern). Our problem side is the Driver side (allen/hex). The allen/hex bolt seem a little larger or different threads than the star and the star works great in the other side and helicoil. Has anyone else has this mess?

Thanks,
Dave

Boy, there is another thread resurrection :).

As I recall, I bought two of those pin from AutoZone, I must have another one somewhere in the garage.

But my Durango is long gone, so I do not have any need for this Helicoil kit, I paid $35/shipped for it from one of the online members, if anyone wants it, I will sell it for $25/shipped and I will throw in one of those pins (if I can find it).

E-mail me if anyone is interested.

Check this out...

The metric pin in my 2000 VW VR6 GTI is EXACTLY what I needed (perfect match) plus the parts store had it in-stock.

THanks for the quick reply.
