 Subject: Engine light No Code!

For the last few weeks, I've been getting the engine light coming on- generally if I idle or do a lot of city driving-I run the on off on off diagnostic but no codes show- What gives? I'm gonna reset the PCM and see how that works.

they quit the "on off" diagnostic codes back in 97. you will have to have a person with the right scanner do it or buy one yourself...

The was an earlier post that said you press the odometer button then on/off five times- it went into a diagnostic mode-but no codes.

... i guess they started it again. In my manual it says that they quit using the on off with the key in 97. hmmmmmmmmm..... even tried it on my 98 and it doesnt work.. hope it works for you though because those scanners arent cheap and the dealer charges a lot

The newer trucks don't use the odometer trip reset anymore for error codes - that does a gauge cluster diagnostic.
To get the error code on a 99-2002 Dakota, turn your key on/off/on/off/on (on, not start) and wait a sec and you'll see the P#### code(s).
A partial database of what each code means is available on the DML at www.dakota-truck.net, and I'll be posting a copy on my website of the codes that Travis Mock made for the RTML next week when I overhaul my performance tips page.
