Whats the best, most effective way of cleaning an engine? I'd like to clean up my engine with 89000 miles on it so it is a little more "show-ready". I'm not going to be tearing the engine apart to paint anything either.

Pressure spraying? Q-tips? What the consensus?

I use Simple Green that I buy at Sam's club for
about $8.00 per gallon and for two very good
reasons #1) it works good. #2) It will NOT
damage clear coated or anodized aluminum like so
many other cleaners will.

Now attach a water hose to your home hot water
heater and you have it made !!

I work as a fireman, so I have a lot of time to clean my engine. I use a simple degreaser or oven degreaser and let it sit for about 5 minutes, spray the engine with hot water, and then use soapy water with a mit to rub the hoses. I use a brush to hit the rest. Then I spray it again, let it air dry. Finally I use a tire shine on the whole engine, one that doesn't foam, just sprays on. Makes the engine look totally new.

investing in a pressure washer saves time,
however, like everything in life, just be careful
where you shoot it.

i started on mine today, the valve casings were jsut caked in grease, well the one it just rusty, the other one (the one with the oil fill hole) was just caked in about 1/4 of an inch in crud, i sh!t you not, so the simple green didnt work, then an idea, WD40, worked great, and it also lubricated the steel and stuff that jsut sits in the open, and possibly penetrated and helped lossen, (if i ever need to) all the little olts down on the engine, also, i found a bolt, dont know wher eit came from but i found a bolt, (most likely from when i took my fender off, i did wind up 1 bolt short on that, so i used one that held the horn on my old Dynasty, and the horn is in my truck too, so i have dual horns, but they are off key so they make this HORRIBLE sound, its soooo sweeet and sexy
