Subject: Gutting the cat????
IP: Logged

Message:
I had a new exhaust system put on my truck a few weeks ago and now I'm wondering if the dealer will void the warranty (for the drive train)

I eliminated the third cat, then replaced the oe muffler w/ a flow and then ran out to duals.

I'm not worried about the exhaust warranty (obviously) but without the third cat can they say much?

If So Should I just gut the cat and have it re-installed?

How hard is it to gut the cat and should I take any precautions?

btw..2002 4.7L 4x4 auto w/3.92's

Thanks

I'm not sure about your question, but I was thinking about removing the thrid cat on mine also. How much more difference did it make in your sound and performance?

Well I also have a pvc h-brew intake,
and I still lost low end. But the low end loss is only about half of what I gained in the top end, as for sound: as you can see I did more than just a cat, so I don't know what yours will sound like, I ran mine out to two 3 7/8 dual tips so at Idle it's a nice rumble at high end wow it's loud, I have to be careful with cops, and I lie in Detroit where nobody really cares

I heard by gutting the cat it makes a really weird hollow noise that sounds like crap. But if you are afraid of getting busted that might be your only option.

I have an K&N intake system with a Ravin dual exhaust with 3.5" tips. I live in South Lyon, MI. I might have to check out your truck.

gutted the c-converter yesterday, (TO ANYONE DOING THIS WEAR A MASK) I found out from my boss this morning that all the dust in the air I was breathing in and the filament I was handling was poisonous. My throat was soar for about an hour (dumb things you do for these trucks lol)

I'm eliminating the third cat on my truck tomorrow with a custom true dual setup from one of my local shops (mandrel bends and all). I can't wait to hear the "noise". If you're worried about the legality, then run a true dual system with dual cats instead of mufflers (unless your state has some silly laws about altering stock exhaust systems or removing mufflers). In Georgia, you don't even need mufflers (as long as you have the cats), but having some kind of back pressure is good (otherwise you'll run rich).

You should of had the muffler shop make you a test pipe. basically they could of cut off the cat, and then flanged the exhaust and then put a piece of pipe in the palce of the cat. then do th same to the cat. at that point you could jsut swap the pipe for the cat whenever you went to get tested or if you didnt like the souond than you coudl of put the cat back on. Not all muffler shops do it but some will

it wasn't for emissions, it was for warranty purposes. I have the 100,000 mile deal and if the thing goes at 85,000 (which it shouldn't) and they see I had removed the cat, they might try and blame it on that. The gutted cat seems to be about the same, but at times seems quieter

I'm in Oklahoma and when we use to have to get inspection stickers on our vehicles some places would check the cat to make sure it was still their sometimes knock on it to make sure it wasn't punched out, so what we started doing was cut it off run a piece of pipe through it weld the pipe to the existing exhaust then slide the cat back over the new pipe (exactly where it was from the factory) and weld it on that way you still have all the insides in your cat but you still have air passing through with the great sound that you want.
