Subject: Replacing serpentine belt

Message:
Any tips for an old guy use to working on old-fashion v belts. I'm untightening the Automatic Drive Belt Tensioner under the alternator using a half an inch socket, but there must be an easier way. What am I forgetting?

To replace the serpentine belt all you do is use a wrence or ratchet on the front bolt on the tensioner (underneath the alternator). Rotate the bolt (and whole tensioner assembly) clock-wise until there's enough slack in the belt to remove it from the tensioner pulley. Then release the tensioner and finish removing the belt.

Installing the new belt can be a little tricky as far as proper path is concerned, but if you have the diagram on the radiator support you'll be all set. What works best for me is to save the tensioner pulley for last and slip the belt into postion over the wrench/ratchet.

You have to get the right "bite" on the nut too or when the belt does come off, your wrench handle may end up resting on something before all the spring tension is realeased. Then you have to put the belt back on just to get the wrench off. You shouldn't be trying to remove any bolts, just putting a wrench on the nut in the center of the tensioner pulley and pulling it to the right. Once you get the hang of it you can have the belt off and back on in about a minute. Much faster then the old style, and they never need tighting.

Thanks intense99dak and Hersbird. I couldn't see paying the shop money for the labor of installing something so easy.

I had more difficulty getting the cap off the refreshments than swapping belts.

If I wanted to remove the A/C from the serp-belt, would I need a shorter belt? Or would the tensioner just take up the slack?

You would need a shorter belt, but I'm not sure what the length is.

I did mine last week. Don't forget to use the right swear words too, especially when it slips off the lower pulley just when you think you're ready to let the tensioner back. I found that the compound and multiple syllable ones worked nicely.

I want to thank everyone who added to this thread. I have never changed the serpentine belt in my life and because of these tips I was able to do it in 10 minutes. Very cool. Thanks

I've replaced the serpentine belt two times on our 97 Dakota. It seems to be slipping forward and ripping up. Any suggestions why this is happening?

Try checking all the mounting brackets on the accessories to make sure they are tight against the engine block, other than that, no clue what could be wrong.

I must be doing something wrong because it takes me 30 minutes of cursing and straining to get the new belt back on. The old one comes off just fine but there is so much tension on the new belt that it just barely fits. I've been using Kelly/Springfield replacement belts. Could they be the problem? They don't seem to last more than about 25k before they start squealing every time it rains. Think next time I'll spend the extra dough on a Goodyear belt and see if it is any easier to get on.

Just changed the belt again and this time opted to spend the extra money for a Goodyear Gatorback belt. Sure am glad I did, thing went on so easy! All I can figure is that the Goodyear belt is made about 1/4 inch longer than the Kelly belt and that is why it went on so easily. I know what I am getting from now on!

Look at the backside of any serpentine belt before your purchase/install. MOPAR belts have a rough surface that grips better than many aftermarket belts and will definately last longer than the Kelly belts you have been using.

Is something seized or binding? Or, were the belts
very loose and slipping excessively?
