Message:
I bought my dakota without power door locks (impatient). Was wondering if anyone had door lock actuators installed in their vehicle. I had a set installed with my basic DEI alarm. They work great but it seems like the actuators are getting too much power. I can hear them vibrate when they continuously try to 'unlock' too far. If the truck has been started, I park, then shut off the ignition, the vibrating occurs when the door locks unlock. If I don't start it, move the switch forward to accessory, let it lock, then move it back to off, let it unlock a couple of times, the vibrating goes away. I'm assuming because of less power from not starting the vehicle.

Anyway, any help would be awesome. I hope I'm not the only one with this problem.

Thanks,
YJ

YJ, Nothing to worry about! My do the same thing, I've had many people look at them to see if there were any problems... That's just the way they're made...

Thanks for the response, QuickRacing. I've heard the actuators in other vehicles before and they sounded perfect. Locked and unlocked just the right amount. No vibrating or clicking. I wonder if I could install an in-line resistor or something to calm them down.

Let me know if you think of something.. I hate the sounds they make too!! I've heard it's just the way they run.. But if you innovate a fix, let me know!

I would think there should only be a momentary pulse when the doors lock and unlock, unless you are holding the switch in too long after the door lock functions, or perhaps there is something binding. I had mine installed and are activated by the after market alarm system and I do not hear any noises that you describe.
Good luck in resolving your problem,

Hey there yj, your Truck sounds exactly like mine,
2k Quad 4x4, Mine is a Sport. 4.7 auto, 3.55 gears.
And mine pretty much came with all the convenience packages and light packages but no power windows or door locks either. Believe it or not I have a Dei keyless entry that my dealer installed for me. BTW where are you at? We could be near eachoter for all I know. Anyways I had power windows and door locks added also and my door actuators don't make the noise you described either. Maybe they are binding or something? Don't know. I saw a post from you on another board here and it was about you thinking of getting power windows. Did you ever do it and how did it turn out? Mine is ok I guess, they used the universal type on mine and it works pretty good and they mounted the switches in the factory door locations which was kinda cool. But I was thinking of changing to the factory type electric life motors.
Anyway Id like to know more about how your windows if you had them done turned out and the door locks and everything. Thanks alot, see ya later.

Strange....my name's Jeff as well.
Mine's a 2K Quad 4x4 4.7 Sport auto with 3.92 gears. Pretty darn close. Mine came with nearly everything but the windows and door locks.
If you're anywhere near Redmond, WA I'm gonna freak. ; )

Anyway, yours doesn't make the noise? Mine's annoying as heck. As for my windows, I never picked up the electric set. I was going to go with a company that made sets specific to your vehicle. They decided to cancel development on the Dakota 4 door set. ; ( Anyway, if you could send me some details on your power window setup and stuff like where you're going to pick up the set of factory window motors, I'd be much obliged. ; )

Thanks again, Jeff.

What is happening is inductance in the coil is causing oscillations.

Better relays and actuators would have diodes installed acros the coil leads to short currents caused by CEMF generated when the magnetic field is created

I would find diodes having a reverse voltage rating of maybe 50VDC (maybe someone has an electrical engineering degree here?)and install them across the leads to the coils. Negative (ground) is connected to the arrowhead side of the diode and positive (from switch) should be connected to the side that has the straight line at the point of the arrowhead.

I have seen MOV's (Metal Oxide Varistor) used across the coil to eliminate oscillation,

Well, the power window setup I have now is the universal type. Your window crank is still there they just put a motor on it that rolls the window up and down for you, they take off the window crank handle and put a cover over it. It's ok but I think that the factory type motors would work alot better. My switches are in the factory locations where they would have been if I got the truck with them. www. autoloc.com is a good place for switches, and a-1 electric, I'm not sure of the exact web address, but I will get it and post it for you. A-1 is where I saw the kit, which is an electric-life kit but they had a listing for the quad cab so i don't know, I need to check into it a little more. Any more questions you have feel free to ask and I'd be glad to send pics if you want any.

Cool, thanks Jeff. I took a look at the DEI Python's brain unit and the door-lock actuators, and found there to be no adjustment. I'm going to have to check out using resistors to bring the voltage down but I'm not too optimistic about it. Anyone know if there are actuators out there that might be more advanced, i.e. adjustments or sensors?

As long as I don't start the truck, the door locks work perfectly. As soon as I start her up, then shut her down, it seems like there's just a ton of extra power in the system and the door lock actuators go nuts.

Sheesh...

Sorry Yj I feel for ya man. I saw a power door lock kit in JC Whitney that might be pretty nice, that I was considering. It says its a Gm replacement system or custom install system so you can pretty much put it in anything, and Its switch operated, which is what I would rather have. I have central locking and am assuming thats what you have also. Hope that might give ya some kind of help. And the kit comes in 2 or 4 door applications. And I believe that it does include all the actuators switches and wiring harness.
Jeff
