Subject: Warranty and Extras ?
IP: Logged

Message:
Well, I am expecting my Dak QC in a week or so. It was supposed to ship today. I'll have to get the tracking number and track it on the rail car (gotta love the power of the net).

I would like to get some feed back from you guys as to getting the extended warranty, paint protectant, undercoating, etc. If you don't mind, what your cost of the variuos warranties and extras were. I would also like to hear some opinions if they are worth it or not. I am sure I will get the sales pitch on all of these things.

Thanks in advance for the input,
Roger

Since you haven't taken delivery yet, now would be a good time to deal with your dealer. I got my extended warranty for $1200, 7 years, 100,000 miles. I think retail on that is close to $3,000 now. I didn't do any of the paint stuff because I think for the most part you can do that yourself a lot better and a lot cheaper. A little Meguiar's Gold Class and it'll stay brand new. I don't know about the undercoating. Not a lot of people here in SoCal get that.

I'm with Ron on that. Mine won't be built until the first week of April (but there's a regional rebate of $2K until 4/30!!). Paint protectant? Are you kidding?! What is wax? Chopped liver? (It's chopped steak!...nevermind...) Besides, since when has factory paint been so bad it needs extra protection? These are profit padders, pure and simple. Same goes for undercoat and fabric protectant. Buy some Scotchguard and spray it on yourself out of an aerosol can if you really think you're gonna be dropping chocolate frozen custard on the seats.

Now on the warranty, I'd like to have an extended one, at least for 70K miles, but I won't pay MSRP for it. I'd prefer bartering for that as well with the finance guy. I'm thinking half-price. "So what you're telling me is I'm paying $25 grand, and Dodge thinks it's likely that it'll break down in about 2-2.5 years??! I feel sick, where's the door...see ya..."

I disagree, I am getting what they call MASTER SHIELD. It is not a wax! a wax will pale out after a while and need to be applied twice a year for better resolts. This is actualy a polymer based protectant. Daimler Chrysler GARANTIES that the original paint will not fade due to sun or air polutants. MASTER SHIELD includes a wax based coting for the doors and such... a polymer based undercaridge protectant (it is not tar or oil), the Paint protectant and a cloth protectant (this is not a waterbased like Scotch guard so you don't need to re-apply after you shampoo the interior(although i have a can of scotch guard, i will do the carpets with it twice a year especialy because of the salt on our roads here in canada). It list for 1100$ canadian and i got it for 432$. I think it's worth it. I will fight to get it free because tonight when i pick up my Dak since they have been screwing me since last thurday saying it's going to be in tomorow. Either that or free oil change for 5 years.

Here is my .02$

Just before I got my truck in, I called the dealer and told him that I decline on the paint and cloth protectant. He said "it's our policy to do every vehicle that comes through this lot. Every vehicle needs it." I said that I don't want to pay for it and he said "Okay, itdoesn't cost us much to do anyway". I also know that he didn't make up the price anywhere else because our deal had been sealed the day that I ordered it and it did not change. The reason I wanted to decline it is because a friend of mine that is a new car salesman at the dealership said that it is a load of crap. He said they charge $550 to spray a wax on it and a little Scotchguard. Sure it may last a little longer than Meguiar's but it does still wear off along with the Scotchguard.

You have to watch these Dealers. They have a million ways to rip you off on a new car or truck.
Get the extended warranty. It's well worth it. But know that most places you can haggle on the price of the warranty. Forget about under coating. If you are in snow country the coating will crack after time and rock salt will get inside the cracks and rust out your truck or car.
Scotchquard will work as good as anything on your cloth and cost $!50.00 less.Do not buy the insurance that the dealer sells you on the differance of replacing your new truck and what your insurance co. will pay if it's totaled in an accident. They want about $500.for it and your own insurance company will usually give it to you for less than $100.00 Don't get their theft alarm. It's also about $500.00. You can get one at Best Buy for $300.00 and it's every bit as good and will also lock, unlock your doors and kill your starter. Not sure about their paint protectant. Wouldn't buy it unlesss they guaranty it would last 4-5 years.Your clear coat should last at least three years with a wax job every now and then. They also make money on stealing your trade in and kick backs from financial institutions. Don't tell them you want to trade your car in till you get their deal on the new one. Then tell them you have changed your mind and want to trade your old car.

DC (and the other manufacturers) make big bucks on selling the extended warranties. Overall it's one of the highest profit margin items they have. For a $1200 warranty, DC expects to pay out an average of $900 worth of repairs over the coverage period. (33% profit margin)

Statistically you will save money not buying an extended warranty. However, like a jackpot, some people save thousands because they run into a big problem that is covered. Extended warranties are a type of insurance, how much you want is up to you.

I prevented the dealer from touching my truck before delivery. The best, easiest product on the market, Zaino, is right for me. I get 3-4 coats out of a $13 bottle, it lasts about 6 months, goes on easy, shines great, and has an SPF rating of 40+ so the paint won't fade.

Zaino is a polish, it is not a wax. It is a polymer formulation and it can't be beat.

The undercoating is really unneeded as most manufactures will give you a 7 year warranty not to rust.
