Subject: Sell, Trade or Donate?

Message:
I'll be buying a new Quad this fall/winter... (probably end of December to get the buyer's market price)

My '93 CC is only worth around $2500 (KBB)

I doubt the dealer will even want it in trade...

I really despise the "For Sale by Owner" game...

Anyone ever donate a vehicle to charity? I've seen billboards here and heard radio ads for donating a vehicle - up to about $2500 limit I think...

Write it off on taxes at the end of the year...

It would be nice to have cash - but the convenience of a donation sounds too good to pass up.

Any Comments?

You can donate a used vehicle to any of a large number of charitable organizations. Your tax deduction is equal to retail book value (properly adjusted for mileage, condition, modifications, etc. ) As long as the vehicle is in average condition, the NADA book is considered the same as an appraisal for IRS purposes. It is best to keep photos and a receipt from the charity listing the vehicle condition for possible audit purposes. Remember, the actual cash value to you of a tax deduction is based on your tax bracket. If you are in the 28% bracket (a reasonable norm) then the donation will reduce your taxes by $2,500 x .28 = $700 (this assumes that NADA says your truck is worth $2,500). If the true trade in value that the dealer will give you exceeds $700 or if the kid down the street will give you $1,000 for the truck, then you are better off financially to sell the truck. The donation, however, has a social value that may outweigh the financial value to you.

As always, please consult your own attorney or tax adviser for how any tax planning opportunity may affect your personal financial situation. (my attorney likes me to include such disclaimers).

BearHit,

Please do some research first!!

There are many 'charitable organizations' collecting cars for resale where only 3% of the sale price gets to a real charity. The 'big guys' like Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army and the like are reputable.

Be really cautious of the ones that advertise [heavily], 'cause those guys have the primary charity as themselves!!

Beyond that, Mr. Hall was right on with the real financials!

If it 'feels good' to donate, do it for that reason, because the real money in your pocket is slim. If you're looking for some dollars toward your new rig and don't want the 'looker/barter' crap, sell it for a reduced price-maybe $2,000-just to get it gone quickly.

If you decide to go the private sale route, don't have the buyer meet at your home. Do it at a well lit mall [eg.] to minimize your risks.

Good luck, and congrats on the upcomming new rig!...D

Hey thanks for the insight - Dave and Doc...

I was afraid the charitable donation was not all it sounded like...

Also agree about the "showing the car at home"
Recently a man and his son were assaulted by thugs who came to look at a car he was selling here in Tucson.

I should get a pretty quick sale, I suppose - being a reliable p/u truck.

We sold a 10 year old Plymouth Laser a few years ago that took forever. (and a whole lot of bartering) I'm not much of a salesman, I guess.

AC is real cold - have recharged it once - still have an extra can of R-12 in the garage

Got a 2 1/2" ball on the bumper

2 Wheel Drive

Still got good power - but I don't race or anything.

I've got 2 boys who are outgrowing the jump seats

Doesn't use any oil - may leak every now and then but I have less than a dozen spots on my garage floor so it may just be residual leakage from oil changes

I don't have a pic handy but I'll get one by next week.

Now remember to ask the boss if you can have a new Dakota... 8>b

Forgot to ask...stick-auto?
What's the hp on that year?
My trailer is 2-3,000 lbs and it has a hard time with the hills with only 125hp/auto.
The boss would love A/C.....
Will I get stuck, with two wheel hunting this fall? I'd like to combine my 2wd/no ac/reg cab truck and my 88 jeep 4x4/no ac into one "cool"
Family/work truck...she has the Accord /no ac.
I'd like to be paying insurance on two cars-not three...to get the job done.
I'm still interested and can make this happen if all works out.....look forward to the pic/pics.
Gotta get some sleep....talk to ya soon.

Automatic, around 200 HP... I forget, between 190 and 210 - I'll check it out

I put new tires on just 6000 miles ago - 235/15s I think - so traction is real good for 2WD

If DrunkAce doesn't buy it, get someone to put it on the "Lemon Lot" out at Davis-Monthan AFB. I used to be stationed out there, stuff sells real quick! Especially a decent P/U Truck!
