Subject: Diff. fluid change
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm getting ready to change the diff. fluid and I have a few questions. Is there a seal that would need to be replaced, or is it just sealed with sealant? What are the torque specs for the diff bolts (front and rear)? Is there any other kind of the anti-spin diff additive other than that from mopar? Where can you get it? - I have looked, but can't find it. I've never done it before, and am looking for all the info I can, so any additional help would be appreciated. I'm going to use Mobile 1 syn. gear oil.

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin, As for the fluid Make sure its is SYNTHETIC GL-5 as for Anti-spin additives most synthetics have the additive already in them, any good lube shop should be able to evac your rear differential without having to remove the rear diffo cover and just ask them to use your own fluid. If you were in the N. CALIFORNIA area id do it for free takes about 2 minutes to evac the rear diffo. If you wanna try it yourself go for it just use a good silicone for the gasket.

Zen NO it wont hurt it the factory recommend GL-5 for the Dodge 8.25 and the 9.25 so no need to worry. (limited slip or the peg leg doesnt matter)

I just changed the fluid in the front diff today and did the rear 2 days ago. From the factory dodge seals the front and rear diffs with silicone. I bought a gasket for the rear and used silicone for the front since the didn't have the front in stock. I used 85W-90 gear lube for the front and back since thats what the dodge mechanic recomended. I was very glad that I changed the front because the fluid was grey and milky in color. Had quite a bit of water in it. But that was expected since I have been in water up to my head lights recently.

I am the Amsoil Dealer with the advertisement
on this website. For your convenience I thought
that I would post prices as of May 15, 2002.

AMSOIL
Series 2000 75w-90 $9.20 Qt. / 75w-140 $12.05 Qt.
retail.(preferred customer $7.20 / $9.35). You can
become a preferred customer for $20 per year
and $10 for 6 month trial and receive up to 25%
off retail pricing.

I believe that GM charges over $13.00 for a quart
for Goodwrench Synthetic 75w-90 GL-5 gear lube.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
I am a personal friend of Mark Hryckiewicz and
work with him at his 9-5 day job.

As a reminder, the current DodgeDakotas.com/Amsoil
contest will be ending May 31, 2002
and as of today 74 people have entered the contest.
We would appreciate any suggestions for future contests.

Thank You.

Steven

Helpful Differential Recommendations:

Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.

Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.

Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause over heating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives.

After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.
Provides the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even in extreme-pressure conditions. Stay fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting.
----------------------
Series 2000 75w-90 - Excellent for use in passenger cars and trucks requiring a GL-5 gear lube, including those with limited slip differentials. Racers and truckers use them, and they will work miracles in your manual transmission or differential.

I have always had my Dak serviced by the dealer.
I want to become a "shade tree" myself. I am
learning a lot on this site. I change my own oil
and that is about all. What do I need to be
concerned about if I change my Diff. fluid myself.
What can I do wrong? What about warranty?

Does anybody know the fluid capacity of the rear 9.25 differential? I just changed to synthetic 75W140 Mopar at 19k miles. I put in 4oz friction modifier, and about 1.3 quarts of the synthetic fluid. Manual says should be about 5/8 inch below the check hole.

Does the shop manual indicate how much the front diff takes?

Just to let you know, the rear diff will not hold 4.9 pints... I put a quart and 2/3 in, and the oil was coming out the fill hole.
