Subject: 4.7 & 45RFE in a Jeep
IP: Logged

Message:
I just got back from a 1200 mi trip from Seattle, Wa to Redding, Ca and back. Borrowed my brothers 00 jeep grand cherokee. It has the 4.7 (HO?) 45RFE.

There are times when I floor it and the thing falls on its face. The weight of my head goes forward while the engine/trans is doing its thing then finally it finishes dropping down a gear and begins to accelerate.

That was the only shift problem I had with it. Towed a 2.5k lbs boat and it did good. That was enough weight for it to still accellerate to traffic speed from on ramp, climb grades and pass. Anymore weight and I'd look at another tow rig for it.

It has a real nice way of shifting down a gear when the hill becomes to much. You can't feel it, you hear the engine get a touch louder or see the tack jump 500 R's. If that seamless gear drop isn't enough, you can hit the OD button to give more umph.

There were times when I felt a bump, as if a car slightly bumped me from behind. Couldn't figure that out. I suspect its the trans doing something, perhaps the converter locking/unlocking at the wrong times.

It has some good take off power, especially unloaded. I was surprised by it since its an OHC, Chrysler choose the right cam profiles for it.

nothing.
Maybe someone else has the same experience with the trans & power that they wanted to share as well. V8 jeeps are fast? I never said that.

there aren't exactly slow. only 5 speed 4.7 4x2s and some r/ts are faster then V8 jeeps
so if jeeps aren't fast then daks aren't either

The 00 GC doesn't have the 4.7HO. The HO was an option for the 2002 model. Both the shift and bump problems have a free fix. DC designed a new driveshaft and reprogramed the tranny's computer to fix these problems. The new flash for the tranny also changes it from a 4 speed to a 5 speed.

I agree the 4.7 Jeep is quick. It takes some ajustment when I switch off from driving my 4.7 Jeep to my 3.9 Dakota.

I was begining to feel like I made a stupid post judging by LI Blackdak's responses.

Thanks for the reply Mike, I'll relay that info to my bro. Glad to see DC took care of the problems.

Does that flash work for the Daks as well? Mine has the same "bump" feeling at about 50 mph, after the convertor has locked up. Dealer said there's nothing wrong but I've had my doubts. Any help would be appreciated.

DC has continuously made improvements to the 45RFE electronically controlled transmission. Have the dealer flash it, and then you will have the most current version. Tell the dealer that you have experienced rough 4-3 and 3-4 shifts and asked them to check to see if you have the most current flash. They should flash it at no cost.
