There may or may not be 3 cats. I was under the impression that all 2001 and up trucks had 3 cats. I crawled under my truck today and I have no pre-cats. I have one main cat with an 02 sensor in front of and behind it. According to my FSM, that means I have emission package NAA which also corresponds to my build sheet. If you have emissions package NAS or NAE, then you have 3 cats. You have one 02 sensor in front of and behind each pre-cat and a main cat, which has no 02 sensors in front of or behind it.

Legally, you can't remove any. If you have a 3 cat setup and you get rid of the main cat, you might still pass smog if you have a sniff test. If you have a 1 cat setup and your remove your one cat, you'll fail smog. And if you don't get a Kat Box or some other device to fool the truck in to thinking you still have 02 sensors, the truck will run lousy. In either scenario, removing the cat may reduce your backpressure so much that your torque will get killed unless you are using forced induction i.e. turbo or a supercharger.

I got a nice increase in power by removing my 3rd cat on my 4.7. Much better power at higher RPMS. It wont hurt the 4.7

I have the 3 cat setup with a home-brew (pvc w/ a k&n).
I took the trird cat off, 2 chamber 40 series flos, out to duals and I lost my bottom end. Granted I can still leave a nice patch but not like before. I need my power in the higher R's, so this is going to work out just fine. I guess I'll have to get Dunner's or Bernd's turbo, hehe.

I replaced the 3 cats with a set of headers and a carsound cat. Made a huge improvement in power.
