Subject: How deep without sucking water?
IP: Logged

Message:
I was wondering how deep a stock Dak can go without sucking in water or causing any other damage. It looks like the airbox intake is between the bumper and headlight.

2001 QC 4X4 4.7L

Thanks.

Depends on a few things.....
How fast are you going...hopefully no more than slow trail speed. Yes you need momentum, but you also shove water into more places that faster you go. And, I don't know where the inlet is for the 4.7L, but the 5.2's are nicely placed and can allow for a decent submarine dive. On my 97 5.2 I removed the inlet tube that goes into the airbox, so I opened my self for a lot of problems. I hit the water at 3-5mph (stopped at the edge just before I went in) dove down at a 20%grade into the waste deep water. A wave about 6 inches think came across the windshield and into the bed. I just started pulling out into the knee deep water when I hydrolocked. Water at that time came up to the bottom of the seats inside and flooded the bed (it was in the deeper part still). After 4 hours I was free and on may way to being towed 12miles back through the rough trail I came down.

Here is the parts count so far.
1 Auto tranny (flooded with water since the breather hole is just below the cab)
$1800
1 New motor (cracked heads, bad piston rings, etc.)
$2300
Seeing the agony on my face
Priceless

We tried flushng out the old tranny fluid, but it only helped, after 6 months the tranny finally gave out. Why is it the the bands on any truck are put together with watersoluable adhesives?
Do not drive it if you have an auto and suspect any water got into it. Water + heat = steam Steam can demolish a tranny in very little time.
That is my warning to you.

Hub deep is no problem. If you've got 31-inch tires that's about 15 inches which is plenty deep and will get you across most creeks that are actually drivable. Next limiting factor is the diff breathers. Those are little plastic tubes that went the axles. Get water in there and you need to replace the gear lube right away. Diff breathers are just a bit higher than the diff housings, so maybe 18 to 20 inches of water. Anything more than that risks expensive damage.
