I just bought a 97 Dakota 4X4, and I just noticed that sometimes when I turn the wheel, I get a knocking sound coming from the steering column. Does anyone else get this? I have tilt steering. Is it the linkage??? Any help would be appreciated!
Also, a lot of times, it shifts hard (grinds gears) when I shift into reverse. What is this? I even wait a second or two after shifting out of a forward gear to reverse???? Is this common?
Thanks, dave

There is a TSB out for the steering knocking. The TSB is 19-05-99. If I remember corretly the dealership need to replace a steering knuckle. It has nothing to do with the tilt steering.

The Dodge trannies are infamous for grinding when going into reverse. Something that works well on my v6 AX-15 is just before shifting into reverse, I shift into first gear.

Something you may want to consider is changing the tranny fluid for Redline's MTL. It's compatible with our transmissions and it does smooth the shifting a little. You can get the MTL through Summit Racing. It's not listed on their web page, but they do carry it.

Is this knocking sound that you are hearing happening only at very low speeds (under 5 mph) and sounds almost like a buckleing or popping noise? Just wondering because my 01 dakota does the same thing and I have had it in to the dealer twice with no results. Even though I have rack and pinion, could this be the same thing?

I has the same clicking/knocking problem. I took it to my dealer and they replaced the clock spring for free. Dont ask me what it does, but it fixed it.

Yes there is a TSB for that steering knocking sound. I had my piece of crap repaired (along with numerous other TSBs) Now, if only I could figure out what to do with that shudder (engine misfire I think) while creeping forward or reverse with no gas applied and foot feathering the brake! Has anyone else noticed when you hit the brakes after driving thru a puddle or after the truck sits in the rain for awhile, how the rear brakes are real grabby? Or is that just because the rear suspension allows the axle to wind up and unload excessivly? What gives with that??? Must a person have the drums turned every 20K? Man, I really need to get rid of this piece of trash. Too bad it has no resale value.

I have similar issues with my '01 dakota quad cab. I
hear a clicking sound while turning & now have about
1-2" of play. Can you just replace the coupler? Is
it just 1 bolt holding it together? My brakes grab
as well & my tranny goes into reverse hard as well.
