From what I hear the new 2003 Dodge diesel will have synthetic engine oil from the factory with extended oil change intervals. Sounds like what I've been thinking myself! And I know how often I listen to me...like never. Are more and more manufactures seeing the value of synthetic oil. That's the recommended oil for the new all-aluminum V-8 in the 2002 Ford Explorer and 2003 Expedition. With the stress that diesels put on your transmissions, auto and manual, synthetic oil will help cool, shift easier and lubricate faster in cold weather. Is this so?
Is it time to consider AMSOIL or one of the others?

I am holding out for the Dakota Hybrid myself. I have read stories that it will have improved hp and much improved fuel economy.
Does anyone have FACTS and not rumors about the new Hybrid? Can anyone recommend a website or an article about the Hybrid?
I can't comment on Synthetic Oil but I do use a blend and like it a lot as I seem to get better performance. I have an average of 8k miles on three Daks and I am switching to synthetics when I do a 10k service check.

Many Car and Truck manufacturers (Mercedes, Ford, Dodge, Exotics, etc.) are now delivering vehicles with synthetics and/or synthetic blends to dealerships. It takes time to adjust the thinking of the driving public. For the longest time it was difficult to sell automatic transmissions, electric starters, fuel injection, etc. The world will soon recognize that in order to save the Earth we must reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Synthetic Oils have longer drain intervals which will reduce consumption.

Some decades ago, Dodge revived pickup sales simply by installing Cummins turbodiesels in their otherwise less than popular trucks. The combination was an immediate hit, and the Cummins diesels have powered Rams since then, providing a unique combination of economy, durability, and power. With Ford and GM now nipping at Dodge's heels, Dodge has announced a new heavy duty version of the already-potent diesel Ram, with a class-leading 600 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm and 325 horsepower at 2,900 rpm.

When introduced as a 2004 1/2 model, the Ram Heavy Duty Cummins 600 will be the strongest heavy-duty pickup available, joining the fastest production pickup (SRT-10) and most powerful mass-produced light pickup (the Hemi Ram 1500). The bad news is that the standard output Cummins diesel has been dropped from the Ram lineup.

The new Cummins 600 has best-in-class towing of 16,400 lb - that's a full 3,000 pounds over the Ford F-350 diesel - a payload of 5,020 pounds, and a best in class GCWR and GVWR of 23,000 and 12,000 pounds, respectively. Its peak torque is generated earlier than the Ford or GM diesels. Despite producing 80 lb-ft of torque and 25 horsepower more than the Chevy Duramax diesel, the Cummins 600 is only $135 more than the prior Cummins High Output diesel.


The 600 is quieter than any prior Ram diesel, and meets 50 state emissions requirements. It has improved exhaust valves and seats, stronger exhaust manifolds, gallery cooled pistons, and an oil bath turbo system. Its oil change interval is double the competition at 15,000 miles, and it is the only heavy-duty diesel pre-equipped for an exhaust brake. It is capable of zero-throttle launches with the six-speed manual (an automatic is available) for smooth drive-offs under load.

Coming up in the 2004 calendar year is the introduction of the hybrid-electric version of the diesel Ram, promising even greater economy and acceleration.
