 Subject: '97 Front Bumper Rust?

My '97 Dakota Sport has the metal top bumper in the front, and its all rusted- and i have seen many other Dakotas with the front bumper (all gen III's) rusted-
Any recalls for these? Any way dodge will cover this?

under warranty. Dealer said that alot had been repainted, of course that was in Hawaii and soon is very intense, plus salt air. Anyway its barely 2 years on the repaint and it looks like crap again!

must be some leftover metal they had from the 70's

I had mine sanded and repainted, but there are already some chips on it. I bought some flat black Chrysler spray and just sprayed it myself, it looks good.
97 3.9 CC Sport. Black. Auto 3.55, Quick D Intake, JBA Stainless headers, Autolite 3923s, stainless Borla Turbo XL, V8 TB, FMS 19 lb fuel injectors, Have, but not installed:Brass cap & rotor, JBA 9mm cables, Borla tip, IAT adjuster,Boyd Coddington Smoot

I did the same as Lesley, sanded and painted it
myself. Easy to do just remove the bumper bolts
and the screws holding the lower valance, sand
it, then paint. I probably should have put
another can of primer and color on it, but
it turned out pretty good.

DataKnight, where did you buy your paint; was it just automotive flat black at an AutoZone type place or did you get paint from Chrysler? Also, did that stop the chipping or is just like new, and slowly working its way back to chipped all over again?
I'm thinking about doing this myself too...

I had mine repainted out of warranty for free by Dodge. It started to rust again a couple of months after. You could put some clear coat on the bumper after it is painted again, this might help. Also, I remember reading about some 3M clear panel covering in this forum. You put it on right over the bumper and you can't really tell its there.

I bought the Chrysler spray paint in the automotive paint section at Canadian Tire, I guess the equivalent for you Americans would be AutoZone? I did have it pulled off, sanded and re-painted at a body shop, but it started to pit afterwards. The spray made a really nice touch up.
Ctdak: I've heard of that 3M covering too, I think it sounds worth looking in to.
Here is what my bumper looks like after the re-paint.

Very nice vehicular snout there, Lesley. :-) I think in that case that I'll hit AutoZone or Pep Boys when I'm ready to tackle this, rather than being financially raped by my friendly North Texas Dodge dealer. ;-)

i had same problem on my 97 i really didn't care about the black anyway so i painted bumpers body color back in 96 about month after i got truck, still look new today, then r/t came out painted same way
