What's his secret , we used to run 17x11's on our '95 Trans Am shop car and had a hard time getting 335's on it. I think R/T wheels are 17x9.5 - right?

If the 335's had a high sidewall....maybe. But if it is a performance tire...no.

I run 275/40 ZR17's on mine

Go to the tire manufacture's web site or the Tire Rack. They have specs for the given tire size. They will tell you the recommended rim width for the tire size. Yes people squeeze over size tires on. What occurs is the side wall gets tapered in and pulls up the contact patch reducing the amount of tire on the ground. The wear of the tire becomes poor and so does handling.

Not only that, but putting tires on over/under sized rims keeps the bead from mating with the bead surface on the rim like it should. Hence, you are way more likely to "blow a bead".

This will also compomise sidewall integrity.
