Hi all. Time for new tires (31X10.50)for my '99 Dak 4X4.
I do more towing/hauling etc than off-roading.
I always hated the stock GoodYears that were on it.
I am down to 2 choices.
BFGoodrich AT TA/KO or
Dunlop Radial Rover A/T
Anyone have any thoughts on either tire?
Thanks for any help!

I just installed a set of Yokohama Geolanders 31" on my Dak, after a lot of research these were the best tires for the price. I was going to get the BFGoodrich KO's but after hearing there's no warranty and they cost more too, I went for the Yoko. Plus the tread pattern looks better.

Here's a pic,

I saw those at the local tire shop as well and liked the price too. Would be interested in getting some input from you like the way they ride, etc. I am looking at new tires for my 98 Dak and decided I am not going to put Dunlops back on it.

I had Radial Rover M/S on a previous truck. They were noisy and wore out quickly. Michelin makes the LTX M/S in 31x10.5. It's a dull looking tire but handles well in all weather including good ice and snow performance. They ride quiet and will last you 50-70% longer than the Goodyears or the Dunlops, but they cost a bit more.

I went with a set of BFGoodrich Long Trail T/A's back in Dec '00. They've seen some relatively gnarly rock-trails and survived with minor scuffs. If nothing else, it is a good testimonial to their sidewall strength.

On road, they are as quiet as any other all terrain would/should be. And they've done a good job driving Denver's streets during the winter months....slightly better now that they have been siped.

As for warranty, my BFG's rolled out the door with a 2 year road hazard replacement warranty. After the intial two year warranty, they are covered for an additional 3 years with a pro-rated warranty...based on tread-wear. Seems weird that Anthony was told that they was not any form of warranty. I've seen the "no-name" tires do that, but not any of the big boys (BFG, GY, Bridgestone, Firestone, Michelin, etc.) in the tire world.

As for pricing, I got them from Sam's Club for $84 apiece. (5 tires x $84 = $420 + $30 for mounting & balancing...not too bad)

michelin and BFG ahve no miledge warenty on their performance tires, or truck tires. so if you wear them out in 5k, you assed out. the store that you buy the tires from can offer a roadhazard warenty though.

The Michelin XC LT4's and XCX/APT both come with a 50,000 mile warranty and those are truck tires.

The Yoko Geolanders have been on my Dak for about 1 month now. First thing I notice is that they look so much meaner than the Stock 31" Goodyear's on my 4X4. Noise level has increased one notch over stock because the Yoko's have a more aggressive tread. For an off-road on-road tire these Yoko's are great. The traction in the snow and the rain is amazing, way better performance than the stock. I highly recommend them, the tread warranty is 40,000 miles or 80,000 kms if your Canadian like me.

I am thinking of replacing my stock 215 75 r15's with some 235 75 r15's.

I have heard some people say that this will affect the ABS sensors, does anybody know if this is true? As well, I know it will affect the spedometer, but by how much, how does one figure out how much it will affect the spedometer.

If it does affect the ABS, can the dealer go into the on board computer and fix this situation? How much do they charger for this kind of thing?

I have a 99 Dakota V6, 5 spd.

Thanks

RE: Tires

Okay, Math 101...woohoo!! First lets look at the tire sizes you quoted to get their height...also known as diameter...

215/75R15 = 27.7" high
235/75R15 = 28.9" high

Now let's apply basic math. The circumference of a circle is equal to the diamter times pi. So...

215/75R15 = 87.02" in circumference
235/75R15 = 90.79" in circumference

Now the differnce between the two is 3.77". Divide that into the original wheel size (87.02"), and you come up with an increase of 4.33%. We can verify this number by multiplying 87.02" times 4.33% (3.77"), and then adding 87.02" to the resulting value...which will equal ~90.79".
So, now we know that the 235's are 4.33% larger.

So how does that affect your speedometer?

Well, going the same distance, the 235's will not rotate as many times as the 215's. This means that in stepping up to 235's, your speedometer will read slower than your actual speed. The difference in that value will be 4.33% less than your actual speed. Hence, if you are travelling at 35MPH, your speedo will actually show ~33.5. Not too big of a difference. The issue here is that using your speedo, your actual speed is higher than what the speedo says (ex. speedo = 75MPH, speed = 78MPH).

Now, for your other questions. There will be some difference in ABS behavior. However, what that difference will be is really hard to say. I know that the ABS system uses your tire size to calculate some form of decelleration curve. Not being a brake-ologist, the actual physics/math of that is above me.

I do know that the new tire size can be programmed into the CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brakes), and that this change will not only correct your speedo, but also your ABS behavior.

And for your last question, I had the dealer re-program my CAB when I went from the stock 235's to 31x10.50's. I think they hit me for 30-minutes worth of labor...about $35.

Hope that helps.

I am planning on grabbing a set of the Dayton Timberline L/T's for my 2000 QC 5.9 in a couple months. First of all I hate those Godforsaken tires that Dodge put on that truck. They did the same thing to my '99 Cherokee. I bought a set of the Dayton's 6000 miles ago for the Cherokee and I love them.
My question.
I am thinking of bumping up a size to 32X11.50x15 for my Dak. Has anyone tried this yet. I am concerned the tire will be to wide for the rim.
Thanks

Other people have posted before that 32x11.5 will fit on the stock 15x7 rims with only a bit of rubbing when you're near full lock in a turn. 31x10.5 is the largest you can go on a stock set up with no rubbing.

I have a 92 Dak CC with Firestone Wilderness ATs 235/75R15s and My speedo is off by more than 4.33% or whatever HALO3 said. Not bashing anyone but apparently tires aren't an exact science. I learned how far off they were first hand . I was cruising about 62-63 mph and was pulled over by a state policeman and he clocked me at 68 mph. I've confirmed at least 5 mph at highway to interstate speeds many times. Halo is right in that is is reduced at lower speeds. LIke I said not trying to pick a fight just sharing my experience.

Strictly going off the tire's posted size is not that accurate, but it gets you into the ballpark. Some tires are actually larger than their posted tire size due to the type & amount of tread on them. Most manufacturer's actually post "ride height" values if you really want to get the actual circumference of a tire.

And to complicate this even further, not all tire companies measure their tires the same way. hehe...gotta love that!!
