I have had two Dakotas with sythetic oil. I only got rid of the first one because it cost too much to ship it overseas. The '89 model used an Amsoil SDF57. My current '93 model uses the SDF42. I believe the new Dakotas also use the SDF42. The threads and gaskets are the same for both sizes, but I recommend the 42 because it has a larger can. I'm told that the SDF series filters can filter down to 6 microns.

Big oil filters RULE! I use the big 1 too, on my Jeep AND the Whipstang! Same-same. Maybe I should snag a case of them- I'm assuming you were refering to Amsoil filters? With the Exxon/Mobil merger, plus buying arab oil, I'm switching to Royal Purple now. They don't buy ANY foreign ANYTHING; 100% USA babe! Amsoil, Redline, Alisyn, etc. etc. are all wonderful I'm sure, but so is RP @ about 1/2 the $$$. Sorry, an oil/ filter change shouldn't cost $75. Just an opinion.....
And yes, there ARE oil co.'s that do NOT buy mideast oil- Sunoco, Citgo, & Conoco. Amoco buys the least of the 1's that do. Companies that import Middle Eastern oil (for the period 9/1/00 - 8/31/01).

Shell................ 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco....... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon/Mobil...........130,082,000 barrels
Marathon............. 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco..................62,231,000 barrels

If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION!

Here are some companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:

Citgo...........................0 barrels
Sunoco..........................0 barrels
Conoco..........................0 barrels
Sinclair........................0 barrels
BP/Phillips.....................0 barrels
Hess............................0 barrels

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and can be easily documented. Refineries located in the U.S. are required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing on a monthly basis.
Keep this list in your car; share it with friends. Stop helping terrorism! OK, I'm off the soapbox.....
So! Dak's are the sh*t, eh? I'm thinking about sliding into 1 next fall. And yes, that'll be a Hemi, thank you. Also the "off-road, hell-or-snow, kill nissans" package please. And air. Daddy likes to keep cool............

Oil is now at $36 a barrel I think. Cost of production = $10 barrel = $26 barrel profit --- all sent overseas to countries that don't like us in general.

Me, I buy BP, at least the Brits are on our side.

Someone sent me an email asking that I clarify the manufacturer of Amsoil filters. Here it is atached to this thread since this is the thread he refered to:
----------
AMSOIL oil filters are made by Hastings, which is a subsidiary of Baldwin. Baldwin still manufactures and markets under both the Baldwin and the Hastings name (Hastings and AMSOIL are made in the same plant in Nebraska) . Baldwin representatives told me that the AMSOIL oil filters use a better grade of filter media, found in only a VERY FEW of the Baldwin filters - simply a matter of economics - it costs more - therefore the reason for the higher AMSOIL Filter price (not a middleman markup).

Amsoil filters are not Hastings! The confusion is that Amsoil just markets the Hastings brand so their dealers will have a source for EVERY filter application imaginable. Amsoil offers and sells Hastings filters but WILL NOT sell Hastings filters for which there is an equivalent Amsoil filter.

In the case of Amsoil filters, I understand the media is different in that they use a synthetic type. The Amsoil filters are rated at 98% effective at 20 microns and about 65% at 10 microns. The information I got from Hastings is they are 98.7% effective at 45 microns and 50% at 22 microns. Baldwin also uses a type of synthetic in their filters that are rated "severe service". I don't have any numbers on these. Not all Baldwins are rated severe service. I think that the severe service filters are for heavy-duty equipment.

When AMSOIL went to Baldwin/Hastings with the specs for the "then new" Mobil 1 oil filter, Baldwin told them that they could certainly manufacture filters that could outperform it, simply by changing to the new media - which they did for Amsoil - which is why many feel the Amsoil Filter is superior.
-----
This post was to clarify the questions of one "member" who had a question about the uncertainty of the Amsoil Oil Filter manufacturers. This information does not pertain to the Amsoil By-Pass Filters, Air Flters, or Fuel Filters. This information was not provided to discredit another manufacturer or or their products.

They're a little late (usually they do this every 6 weeks) but the K&Ns are finally on sale again (from Aug 9-15). Just in time too, I was getting scared, as I'm changing my oil in two weeks, so if they weren't on sale this weekend, or next weekend, I'd have to pay full price on one of them (at $16.99, versus just over $13 when on sale)
