I have a questio regarding tires on my '99 Dakota 2WD Regular Cab SLT. It's got 31,000 miles on it and my OE 255/65/15 Goodyear Eagle LS's are worn out. I need to replace the tires, but don't want to buy these again. Appears no one else makes that tire but Pirelli and I'm not interested in those. I've had it recommended to me by one tire person to go with 255/60/15 Dunlop Qualifier GT's because they would handle alot better and would fit just fine on the truck. I also had someone recommend 255/70/15 BF Goodrich Defender's. What do you all recommend. Which size, etc. would look and handle best. I'm kind of a dunce when it comes to this stuff.

thanks.

Look at 275/60/15, it is a common size and should be a good price. It will give you a little wider tire (not much) and leave the height about the same.

Nice call! I havent met to many people that acually know how tires are really measured (unless they are the 33x12.50x15 style) most people seem to think the middle number is the width!

So is the 275/60/15 going to change my speedometer much? What about the 255/60/15? I was told by a guy at Tires plus that the 255/60/15 would be a better looking tire, and they seem to run a little cheaper. What about tire brands in these sizes? Any help is apprecaited. Thanks. I just don't want to change the handling characteristics much because I like the way it handles now.

actually... changing either number changes both width & heigth.. don't take my word for it though.. go here http://www.goodyeartires.com/catalog/products/WRLATSSize.htmlThat's the true sizes of the GoodYear AT/S tires I had those on my F-150 4x2 and they were awsome. Didn't notice any extra tire noise on the highway.. and they were great when I got in some mud.

If you go with the 255/60 tire then your speedo will read just a tad fast (about 2-3mph). That tire will be just a little shorter about 1 inch in diameter.

The 275/60 is almost the same size as your factory tire, 1/16" difference in diameter and mph change. The only difference is the 275 will just be a tad wider, so it should improve your handling.

I have a 2000 SLT CC 2wd. It has 35,000 miles on it. I just recently got some 275/60R15 Firehawk SS20's on it. The tires are 7/8" wider. Worlds of difference traction wise in the rain. They ride smoother and are quieter on the highway as well.

Not my truck, but here's some pics of the same tires on a 2000 SLT QC:
