Subject: 3.9L V6 QUAD CAB IP: Logged
Message: I RECENTLY PUCHASED A NEW 2000 DAKOTA QUAD CAB 4X4 WITH THE STANDARD 3.9L V6 ENGINE. DURING THE BREAK-IN PERIOD, THE ENGINE PROGRESSIVELY GOT LOUDER AND SEEMED TO LOOSE POWER. AT 3500 MILES I HAD THE DEALER CHECK IT, AND (OF COARSE) WAS TOLD THAT SINCE "THE ENGINE LIGHT DIDN'T COME ON THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING NORMAL". SINCE THEN, I HAD TO ORDER SOME LOWER DOOR SEALS AND WHEN I RETURNED TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM INSTALLED (UNDER WARRANTY), I ONCE AGAIN COMPLAINED ABOUT THE LOSS OF POWER AND SOUND OF THE ENGINE. AGAIN I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING FINE. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS???? OR AM I JUST CRAZY... THE TRUCK HAS 4500 MILES ON IT AND ALREADY FEELS LIKE IT NEEDS A TUNE UP....ANY ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Message: I have a 2000 QuadCab V6 5 Speed as well and I have a lot more problems that this. Check back through the post to find TEST FOR V6 posts and you will see what I mean. You could try disconnecting the computer for ten to fifteen mintues and that should reset it and then see what happens.

ITS FUNNY YOU MENTION RESETTING THE COMPUTER.
THE TWO TIMES I BROUGHT IT IN TO GET IT CHECKED, IT SEEMED TO RUN MUCH BETTER FOR ABOUT 1-2 DAYS AFTER. I ASSUMED THAT THEY RESET COMPUTER BUT I'M NOT SURE (MAYBE I'LL ASK.....YOU MIGHT THINK THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT)
CONFIDENCE IN THE DEALER IS SLOWLY DETERIORATING

With only 4500 miles on the truck, I would suggest that you keep taking it to the dealer for whatever you feel needs "fixing". Eventually, they will either get everything fixed or you will fall under the "Lemon Law". (It happens...every manufacturer has their bad seeds...it just sucks when it happenes to you personally.)
The break in period is about 1500-3000 miles but most have noticed a slight gain in performance at the 10K mark. (Can't explain why...lots of theories about it, but no proof.)

Message: Thanks for the suggestions Bernd....Ive read a lot of the old posts, and you really seem to know your stuff.
Do you have any theories on why my truck seemed to run better (more power and pick-up)1-2 days after the dealer looked at it?

Honestly, no idea. Unless they did something without telling you...that's happened before.) If they did reset the PCM, it takes about 50-75 miles for a quick "learn" and about 200 miles for a complete "learn". (Before the 50 miles it runs on a predetermined table and they do have a little bit more pickup....that may be the case in your situation.)
