i work at a tire shop and every dakota i have seen with 15x8 or 16x8 inchwheels always had an aluminum wheel for the spare so i looked under my 2002 cc 4.7 with the tire and handling package and it has a STEEL WHEEL for the spare, but it does have a goodyear eagle ls as the tire. did i get hosed or something?

No, you are not alone. This is part of DaimlerChrysler's move to reduce costs. They have removed or eliminated things on all of their vehicles to cut their cost, but not reduce the cost you pay for the vehicle. Most items are things they "believe" the customer will never notice or want. Remember those badges on the front fender of the Dakota that indicated V6 or V8, they are gone too.

Both my 02 SLT+ Durango and my SXT Dak came with the matching tire but mounted on a cheapo wheel. Also missing is the light inside the console, the light that illuminated the cup holders, the seat back pocket on the drivers side seat and on the Durango a key hole on the passenger side door.
These are things you don't notice immediately, but piss you off once you do.

Yeh even the 2002 r/t's have a steel 17" wheel with the factoy tire mounted. They want to save costs, but then they make you buy the new chrome wheels, only to get a black sttel spair. Actuall I was thinking 4 of those black steel 17"ers would look pretty tough on an R/T, like the old 69 440-sixpac cars.

Let's not forget that they have ditched the light in the ashtray, the under-hood light, the hood insulation, the lighted ignition-halo....should I go on?!?!

As for the rims, I was in the same boat. My Quad Cab had the generic steel rim. Fortunately, I managed to procur a matching rim for free, and I can now do my five-tire rotations! 8^)

What ash tray!

I didn't know the other years had an alumninum rim on it! What a bunch of crap.

I was wondering if you all had to buy a new rim to rotate your tyres 5-way on the "4 way or 5 way" post...damn!

My dad's 95 GMC Sierra 1500 has an underhood light and this like other underhood light that has a cable on it and a magnet, a pretty long cable too that spools out on a wheel, so you can poke around the engine REAL easy (it's only a 6, so it has enough room to fit a body under there). It also has a hood liner! Why are cars going so cheap now... You can even have it reach so you can put it on the fender and aim it down incase you need to change a tyre in the dark..

The underhood insulation came with my '01 SLT package in my QC. Mine's a Jan. 01 build, later in 01 they discontinued the underhood insul. on the SLT's.

I have the tire and handling, with a 5th 16"spare mag wheel. I don't do 5 wheel rotations though, just get 3 next time and keep the best for the spare. not much UV under the bed.

What is the function of the underhood insulation?
Does it quiet engine noise?
Does it keep the paint on the hood from cooking over time?

Dave,

I think it's to keep it quieter. I think aI also read somewhere that the SLT also came with some firewall insul. as well. Mine sure is quiet! Helps you hear the intake on accel. better.

Don't forget....01 Durango SLT's did not have the engine compartment painted, just primered. Heard they started to paint them again in 02 after complaints.

That's too bad that DC is cutting costs at the expense of the little things that are obviously important to us.

I have a 2001 QC with the tire&wheel package and it came with a matching alloy wheel. No under hood insulation though.

I guess we couldn't expect Daimler not to mess with the Dodge formula.

It's either cut costs or raise prices. One of the two had to come. As far as the hood insulation, I don't miss it. The spare? Less likely to get stolen. Missing a keyhold on the passenger side? I hope that was a mistake. No ashtray? That's a no charge option, if you wanted it all you had to do was code it. No light to illuminate the cupholder? Why was there a light there in the first place?

Hers: sounds like you need to find 4 people wanting a good looking spare (shouldn't be hard) :)

Hey All,

My 99 came with the "under-hood light", "insulation", "ash tray ligh", and "the full size tire and spare". I guess starting in 2000 they stopped giving out all the goodies.

I'll sell you all each one of my rims with the tire after I get my lift in June for real cheap
.....lol

My 2000 R/T has the insulation (with cool rams head no less) and lots of lights (under the hood and inside the truck) and I have a full size 17" spare and 17" RSA that had never touched the ground until I got ahold of it. This is another reason I prefer the 2000 above other years. Also the 2000 has no precats but does get the better injectors and an electric fan. Finally MP makes a PCM for the 2000, at least the R/T. I'd like to think I knew all this in advance, but really I just wanted yellow and it worked out good!
