I finally took possession of my Dakota and so far it's been great. There is so much I want to do, but I think I'll hold off on most of it until I save up some money, and drive the truck some more. Anyway, I have a question as well...when I'm driving at night with my lights on and then park and turn off the engine before I turn off my lights, the lights stay on and I have to put the key back in the ignition, turn it once, and then turn off my lights. Although if I turn off my lights before the engine, everything is ok. Any ideas on what's going on?

Thanks,
Got Dak?

If I'm not mistaken, they're sort of supposed to do that...kinda like if you're in the dark (literally) and are walking to your house, they help you out. They only stay on for another minute, and if I am not mistaken, even if you leave them on, they turn off after a while (I think it's 15 min.)

Congrats, by the way! It must be a relief, huh?

Current mods: A MUFFLER. That's it. (For now.)
Future mods: Tonneau cover
Underdrive pulleys
Removal of clutch fan
K&N FIPK
17" rims
And much, much more...

After the Engine is off, turn the lights off then on then off and they will go out.

Or..... turn the lights off and walk away ...they will go out in awhile.

Or.... leave the switch alone and they will go out after about five minutes.

This is what I have noticed on my '01

I have a 2001 and yes, its a convenience thing. To shut them off after you turn off the truck, just turn the headlights back on then off. I don't think you have to have the key in for it.

Got Dak?,

Congrats on the purchase!

There's more cool tricks you may discover or never discover. If you read your owner's manual you'll learn how to reprogram the horn not to honk when remote locking the doors and how to read the engine codes on the odometer display...

I got the dealer to get rid of the horn when remote locking, so I didn't have to do it...damn thing was annoying. Any other cool tricks out there?

They are supposed to do that. nothing wrong with your truck. you don't have to put the key back in. just on and off again will do it. just a helpful hint. it's actually beneficial to read the entire owner's manual. you will discover other little things that your truck is supposed and not supposed to do etc. this will save you a lot of worrying when you find something later on. I saw in my owner's manual that there's supposed to be a light in the center console but i didn't have one. i checked on it and THAT was a printing error on Chrysler's part. Info on how to determine axle weight limits and everything is there. Congrats on your Dak!
