 Subject: Popping sound from intake??

I have made my own homebrew air intake, K&N filter and some Lowes special PVC pipes. Looks good and it runs great, even sounds good, especially for a 4 cyl. But when I am accelerating usually in 2nd or 3rd gear I get this popping sound. As if it is almost back pressure, but it is coming up through the tube instead of a backfire out the ass end? It doesnt happen all the time, but only every so often. Anybody have any ideas? Please help, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
