I'm looking into a home brew intake for a Sport Plus V6 3.9 4X4 and was wondering which air filter to get. So far I've had two suggestions...1> KNN-RE-0950 and 2> KNN-RE-0810. Which would you suggest?

Ahh the heck with waiting. Just look it over good before you buy it. The first week I owned my dakota I put on all the stuff off of my last one. IAT adjuster, cat back system, K&N drop in. Then had everything that I have on now by 3000 miles.

hehe, nope. Instant gratification is WAY better than waiting.....

So far, I have spent roughly $5000 in mods and aftermarket parts ( including ones that are not on the truck yet, like the supercharger, roll pan, suspension, and stuff like that.) I haven't even had the truck for a month yet....hehe. I haven't even made my first payment yet!!!!!!!

Now only if my Corbeau seats would get here.....

GOT DAK?

There are a lot of different sizes that can work on a home brew setup, here's a link to K&N's Universal Air Filters you can look up the dimensions of the one's you listed above or find a size that will work for you. If you go to Summit's web site you can search the part # under Mfg. and get a price.

K&N's Universal Air Filters

If you like I can e-mail you a photo of one I made for my son's Olds Cutlass.

I pulled up this old thread because I did not want to start a new one. I know a lot of guys replace stock OEM with K&N becauses it reduces restriction to the airbox assembly. The general opinion around here is that K&N filters are not good for our trucks since they allow more dirt into the engine. This results in higher Si numbers. However, do we really know if these higher numbers are bad? Since we are dealing in ppm, would the increase be actually detrimental to an engine?

Yes, any increase in silicon from dirt is bad.

You can often see on analysis when high silicon is dirt, and not other forms of silicon (gasket material, antifoaming agents, etc), because then the wear metals across the board are higher.

Not all cases with K&N air filters show very high silicon, but generally speaking they are not as efficient at trapping dirt as paper filters are.

Even if you only see a 2 or 3ppm increase in dirt over a 5k mile interval, it will definitely reduce your engine's life over the long term. By how much or how little, it's hard to pinpoint exactly though.

"2 or 3ppm"/ 2 or 3 parts per million. That's a ratio of 2:1,000,000 or 3:1,000,000. I think I can live with the reduced wear my K&N drop-in affords from lower throttle openings and less strain on the engine in daily driving, i.e. longer engine life.

Amsoil Sponsor and 01Motorsport,

Silicon is SAND (DIRT) ... Abrasive like in sandpaper or sandblasting.

I think you both make valid comments. I like to see single digit silicon (dirt). (that is a 1 to 7). If the increase of 2-3ppm Amsoil Sponsor mentions puts you in the high single digits (8-9ppm), or the horrible case of over 10ppm, I would be concerned as these would be high silicon #'s. Not only is it the high silicon, but K&N has larger pores for higher air flow and the joke around here is that it keeps out "Bricks and Birds". 90% of the analysis I review using a K&N results in elevated silicon (dirt) AND associated high wear metals. I would suggest everyone do an analysis with their K&N, then replace the K&N for a bit with an OEM/paper element, check your induction system closely for leaks and re-sample at 2000 to 3000 miles. IMHO, K&N is great for weekend racing for not for daily driving.

If there are results showing higher levels of silicon with the K&N's, why risk using it? Honestly, I don't think the little flow gains that one might get are worth chancing more dirt getting into the engine.

P.S. As you all know there are other sources of leaks that may cause an increase in dirt ingestion: PCV grommet, IAC breather tube, vacuum leaks, etc...

Conclusion: There are enough ways for silicon to enter the engine. Why use a K&N and risk additional silicon contamination for a "little" more air flow.
