Subject: CB Mounting Location?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2001 CC 3.9 4x4 with the dual buckets up front and the big center console in the middle (room for 2 up front). I have a CB that I want to permanently mount somewhere inside the truck. I don't want to put it in the console because it would make it tough to hear and adjust channels quickly and I want to be able to drive with the console cover down. Anybody have any suggestions on where I can mount it. It is a small CB so it would fit a lot of places, but I can't seem to find a spot that both looks good and is functional. Thanks.

Bill, I've been looking at the pocket in the door for mounting my CB. run the wires through with the pwr windows and stuff. First I need to buy Weatherflector/VentShades because I find that my window drips like a bugger when it's down past 1" in the rain.

I have a 2001 QC SLT 4.7 Auto, I have lots of Radios, I am a Ham Radio Operator, Most of our stuff is small. I mounted 3 rigs under the dash, right near the ashtray, that works for me. I use the empty power slots in the fuse box for power on 1, and a direct connection to the battery on the others. Battery connection is better. The QC has a nice grommet under the rear seats to fish coax through as well.

My suggestion is to take the radio out to the truck with the mounting bracket on it, put it up to a few places, see if it looks right. Make sure its not in your way for driving.

I guess I will just have to go out and just hold the CB up to a bunch of places and see if it will work anywhere. There just isn't a real good spot for one but I really want to mount it somewhere so it is always available to me quickly since I do a lot of driving and want to be able to listen to it in traffic jams. THanks for your suggestions.

My wife is the primary on the 2001 QC. I had to have an eleven meter radio in it for winter use. I travel to some remote places where eleven meter is monitored more then anything else. I found an old hygain no.4 I think (remote mount). I mounted this under the rear seat and pulled coax through at that site as well. The radio is a full size chasis and all controls and speaker are on the mic. I can also modify this radio for ten meter use as well if needed. I used the standard 18" of super mini 8 and a 102" SS steel whip on the rear bumber. I passed the mic up through the front seat by the arm rest. I tuck the mic under the middle lap belt up front so it is out of the way. When not inservice the radi can be easily removed for cargo space. If I put the mike under the rear seat you can not even tell their is a radio in the truck. If you need to have multi band access I would recomend a nice multi-band set up with a remote mount control head. This truck is my first new truck/car and I did not have the hart to mar the dash. The wife also did not want me turning it into a mobile radio station. P.S. Sear also had a roadtalker that was a remote mount and I belive they even had one with SSB. Look on Ebay.

I mounted a switch box in the same place Chris Smith mentioned (next to the ash tray). It's a good spot; just don't use long screws to mount the CB. Have you considered removing the center console? Then you could either build a box just the way you want it or buy a radio rack like what they have in police squad cars (www.galls.com). Also, how and where were you planning on mounting the antenna?

I don't think I want to remove the center console. I use it to store a lot of stuff. I already have the antenna mounted and the wire run so that isn't a problem. I think I will try to mount it under the ashtray like you guyshave suggested. Do you guys know if they make microphones with the speaker and channel changer built in that work with an existing CB that has just a regular mic(THat's what i have but would like a mic with the speaker and channel changer in it). Thanks.

Bill, maybe this will help. The Cobra 75WXST has all the 'guts' in the mike, channel changer, speaker, etc. and the only thing that you mount is a small box with all the connections for mike, coax and external speaker. This seems to be the ultimate setup for a stealth type mount. They also sell extra boxes so that you can run the same CB in multiple vehicles. CB Post

Thanks for the info. John. I wish there was a way I could use the CB I already have and buy a mic that would have the speakers and channel changer built in that would work with my existing CB. Maybe it's time to put the old one up on Ebay and buy the one you wrote about because that sounds like what I really need! Thanks!
