Subject: Found the squeaking, how do I stop it?
IP: Logged

Message:
Up until a few weeks ago, this squeaking sound coming from the steering column in my '93 Dak was driving me crazy. I could even hear it over my stereo--and that's loud. Anyways, I took the front of the dash off to get to the steering column, and come to find out, IT was making the squeaking. I can drive around with it off and it sounds fine.
But, I thought that the plastic was squeaking against the vinyl, so I put a little grease around where it met, but it didn't help. Then, I put small strips of duct tape around the plastic and it stopped for about a week. Now it's back and just as loud.
PLEASE HELP ME--IT IS SOOOO ANOYING.

sell. its a sign of impending doom.
could you try a little sand paper to roughen up
the edges?
maybe try not tightening the dash down so
much as to allow it to shift.
Back it up with foam to tighten up the
movement.

Johnny,

Lots of us Durango owners have that also. Turns out it is actually the u-joints in the steering column. Take some WD-40 and spray it on the ujoints under the hood. there are 2 locations.

Let us know what happens.

Mike

No, it's the dash. Like I said, I took it off when I first tried to fix it, and just having it off stopped it completely. Also, when it does squeak, I can compress the plastic dash and the vinyl together with my hand and it also stops then. What if I put that real thin foam weather stripping stuff around the dash opening when I take the front of it off? Just cut out the screw holes? I don't know. I'll probably get back on it someday this week. Oh yeah, who's Johnny? :)
