Well, most people (including myself) have been under the impression that this white foamy stuff is only collecting in the filler neck. Well, today after changing my oil, I let it run for a couple of minutes..and checked the oil level.....sure enough, there was with foammy stuff mixed in with the oil on my dipstick...

Hey, I sent a letter to the Lemon Aid guy, Phil ?. He told me to right a letter to DC stating that I will hold them responsible for all repairs to my truck after the warrenty expires due to the white foam. I also attached a note to the service survey DC sent me with the same. I don't know what else we can do. QC 4.7l 4X4

That filler neck is really p**sin me off,I did the same, wrote a letter, filled complaints, showed the dealer, took sample and pics and will continue to do so but you know what there own stupidity is gonna cause them alot of greif in the end so now I will not clean it anymore, I go to the dealer and report water in my oil, I have 3 documented reports now, they dont wanna buck up a couple dollars for a new designed valve cover now just wait in a few years when they will be flipin the bill for new engines,it`s too bad they are ruining a great engine

All engines produce this oil-water emulsion. The 4.7L V8 is just very efficent at collecting it in the filler neck due to several factors.

These include
* PCV valve located on filler neck concentrates all the gunk right there.
* Cold air blast from fan promotes condensation fallout.

I was one of the first people to "complain" about this problem with the 4.7L V8 in October of 1999.
As a result, a redesign of the oilcap and the addition of a baffle was implemented.

They also issued this bulletin:
http://www.geocities.com/natedak2k/Oil_cond_TSB.jpg

* It has been shown that running synthetic oil greatly improves the situation.
* Also running the engine HOT at least once a month helps the PCV system to remove this gunk. * Also occasionally pull the baffle out and clean the filler neck with a rag.
* Keep the PCV valve clean!
* Putting insulation on the filler neck would also improve the situation. (the idea is to reduce the loss of heat from the vapors off of the oil pan... try one of the "beer can insulators" upside down and trim it where required with a blade.)

Puttin a oil-fill on the hi-tech magnesium valve covers is NOT a good idea. It would NOT improve the situation. At best, it would HIDE the gunk where you could not access it to clean it out.

I would be willing to bet that a redesign of the breather system would do it. All that needs to be done is a relocate of the PCV intake from the filler cap to the valve cover.

No kidding CW,I and many other people have suggested this to my dealer, they just shrug and say cant do nothing till DC says so.Bruce all engines do this very very little tho,not to this extreme, the baffle does nothing to fix the problem and yes I use mobil-1 synth oil, anyway I dont care anymore I will just keep reporting water in my oil, they like documentation so I just keep documenting it

Hey Bruce P.:

How do I get the baffle off without destroying anything? Does it just pop out? I will probably take a look in there soon. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

The intent of the "baffle" is direct the condensation away from the PCV valve and twards the center to drip back into the filler neck. (Without it, the entire filler neck would eventually become coated and the PCV valve would plug up... I know... I have seen it.)

You do not have to remove the baffle to add oil. The oil just flows past the the "fins" into the engine.

Do not forget that ALL of the moisture that is ending up in the filler neck is coming thru the air filter and into the PCV intake hose. (that small hose that connects between the TB and the air filter)

A "cold air" intake system with a open "K&N" filter will tend to suck in MUCH more moisture.
You could put one of those PCV air filters on that little hose to suck dryer air into the crankcase.

QUESTION: For those of you that seem to have a bad case of the "froth" in the filler neck. What kind of air-filter system are you running?

Seems like cold air system would only suck in more moisture if its raining. Warm air will hold more moisture than cold air.
