Subject: A/C Compressor spinning without A/C on??
IP: Logged

Message:
Had a question. I have a 2000 4.7L Dak. I have been hearing this compressor activating sound while driving with JUST THE HEAT on. So one morning, right after startup, checked it and found that the front part of the AC compressor pulley intermittently spins for about 2 seconds and stops. That is the sound that I have been hearing. Now, let me get this straight. I thought the a/c compressor spins only when the A/C is ON, which in turns, puts a drag on the drive belt?? Right?? So why is it turning with merely the vent on hot, with the blower motor on? IS THIS NORMAL? THanks. If not, it's going to the dealer with the warranty.

As I stated in your other post, yes this is normal. The a/c comes on with the defroster to kill the humidity in the heated air so your windows clear up.

Thanks, QUADMAN. But, it's coming on when it is in the floor position. Maybe, it is standard for the compressor to work to keep the humidity of the heat down??? Well, I think I'll spray some silicone on the bearings of that pulley because over the last 10,000 miles it has gotten slightly louder so that I notice it in the cab.

When the vent is set in the floor position air also comes out of the defroster vents which causes the compressor to run. set your dial to the feet and face setting and see if the compressor still runs.

This present design is really stupid.... Why the #^%$ do I want the AC compressor coming on when it is -30F? The winters here are so dry that there is no moisture to remove from the air. (but the AC hoses like to burst from the AC running at very low temps.)

A common "upgrade" that folks do to their Dakota is to add a pushbutton to control the "enable" line to the PCM for the AC compressor.

Take a queue from the Asian carmakers and add a pushbutton so YOU can control when the AC compressor is "enabled".

Two things to note.
First. Regardless if you had the pushbutton or not and your dash control is set to the Mix (face and feet) or Defrost position the AC clutch can be activated. All of this is still dependant on engine rpm and refrigerant pressure.

Second. At -30F the AC clutch will not be running anyway. The system has a low pressure switch that does two things. It senses if the pressure is too low and turns off the compressor to prevent damage due to it, when a loss of refrigerant occurs. Also because of the relationship of pressure and temperature of refrigerant, the switch will open up below 30F keeping the compressor off at cold temps.

Yeh, even the cars with a a/c switch still run the a/c compressor in other modes even when the switch is off. I was able to pop off the cover of my neon's climate controll system and drill a hole in the circut board that added the a/c in other modes thus enabling the a/c only when the button was pushed. I don't thnink the a/c system can tell it's below 30 degrees out and not run the a/c. I live in a climate when its often below 30 and the a/c compressor still runs when in defrost. I agree its stupid, if the windows are fogged up I will turn on the stupid a/c, the system trys to do to much thinking for you. It's made for Georga and Florida, not Montana.

Ha Ha Ha! This is soooo funny! Do you know how many people b!tched and moaned to get it the way it is now!? LOL! I agree that We should be able to control it or that it ONLY comes on in full defrost mode, what is so funny is that I first ran across this about 10 years ago. I was selling toyotas and people kept complaining about the windows fogging up, I told them to cut the a/c on and it would clear up, as it would. About a year later I think it was car and driver or somebody wrote in complaining about toyotas window fog problem and that you shouldn't have to cut the a/c on to clear it up. Low and behold the next year the a/c automatically came on with the defrost. Now I don't know if any of this is related or not, I just find it funny that no matter what the companies do, someone isn't gonna like it.

The big difference here is Toyota people still need their mommas to cut up their food for them (like consumer reports), Dodge people actually can think for themselves.
