I have an 89 dodge dakota 4x4 v6 3.9L. There is a gas line visible from the rear drivers side wheel well that seems like its been broken off. The manual I looked at didn't show this line going anywhere though and labeled it I believe to be the drain line. The problem is I'm getting positive pressure in the tank, I can hear air rushing out when I pop the cap. It also seems to happen more when its sitting in the sun or right after I've been driving it, I assume from the heat. When I see gas coming from the "drain" line I simply open the gas cap and it stops. I thought it could be a blocked atmospheric vent but I've had no problems with it running. This all has happend before and after I had a new fuel pump put in. I want to just block off the line but I don't know what that will do. And I thought the vents were to relieve negative pressure to prevent vapor lock. I've taken it to my mechanic 3 times and he doesn't know what the line is or can find a problem. Hes been compitent in the past.

Why dont you just run a new line, and this will be like the stock form. all gas caps are to create preassure in tank so fuel will flow to motor.

I thought the pump was used to flow fuel to the motor?

Don't these gas tanks have pressure relief valves somewhere? I -think- they are in the gas caps themselves... but I might be wrong. Sounds like yours isn't working.

I can't run the line anywhere, according to the manual it doesn't go anywhere. But the flow to the motor is fine.

I'll check my gas cap but I dont' think it has a relief valve.

I'm just going to cap off the line because I don't see how that can effect anything.

I know there is a relief valve -somewhere-, and it's apparently clogged. If you plug the pipe you risk explosion (minor). You'll have all these fuel vapors with nowhere to go... gasoline isn't explosive, but the vapors are.

At the very least, next time you get gas, don't stand in front of the gas cap. It might come out like a cork out of a wine bottle!

I had an aftermarket gas cap and I put the old stock one back on and I'll see is that helps.

Though yesterday it overheated and was spraying coolant all over. The heater wasn't working so I knew something was up right before the temp gauge rose. I hope its just the thermostat, but maybe its the water pump. It has 156,000 miles plus NY winters and it still runs great. :-)
