Subject: Q for Z tube owners

I just got an Intense Performance Z-tube setup for my '02 4.7. I thought the tube was made of aluminum, not steel. That's a heck of a lot of weight to be hanging off the TB with no support. Anyone had problems with this? Does the tube sit on top of the motor? Or is it just hanging there? Seems like a less than ideal setup to me. Also, on the unit I got the finish was poor, and they sent the wrong filter. So I'm thinking about sending it back.

Well, my Z tube has been hanging there for 15,000 miles now and never has come loose, fallen, etc.
Just hangs there and does not rest on anything.

Same here. Plus, I have the bigger 4" tube on mine, and it hasn't moved at all since I put it on 2 months ago. I had the regular z-tube for about 12,000 miles and it never came loose either. Just tighten them clamps down real good and you will be fine.

On my 2000, the Z-tube is resting near the wheel well where the factory air box used to sit. As a precaution, I used a heavy duty plastic wire tie to hold it in place when I bounce around on and off road. Seems to have done the trick. Like you Aaron, I was concerned the Z-tube would put unneeded stress on the TB with out some added support.

Aaron - I've had the same concerns about many of the high performance air intakes for the 4.7L. That is a lot of additional stress put on an aluminum throttle body and plastic intake manifold. It would seem like that much weight hanging off the end of the TB without any additional support could cause the TB or intake manifold to crack after a period of time. Knowing how many components today have little margin for additional stress your concern is probably warranted. Also, I'm sure Dodge did not design these pieces to have an additional 5-10 lbs hanging off the end of them. Given the weight and length of these intakes, they could probably generate a bit of torque on the TB and intake manifold. In the short term it may not cause any problems. My concern would be after 50K+ miles. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Gentlemen,

I've had a Z-tube installed for about 8 months now, without ANY problems! Keep in mind, the coupling is neoprene rubber and my unit "rests" on the passenger side wheel well. C'mon, just how much "stress" could that possibly put on the TB? (Which is BOLTED to the intake manifold, metal to metal!) The tube seems to be metal coated with ceramic - for heat dissipation, I would imagine.

Save yourselves this mental stress, and go for the 360airintakez setup. Pretty much the same design,,EXCEPT,,it comes in two pieces w/a connector in the middle of the 2 bends. This allows you to move/pivot the end piece so it can rest in bay. Plus it's a heck of alot easier to get the air filter out to be cleaned.
I'm not bashing the Z-tube,,I almost got one,,but this one is cheaper,,,,,same quality (IMO), and is mo' manueverable.

I had a z-tube and sold it, after the initial yeah this rocks I found it did very little actually hurt the bottom end a bit,all those intakes are just 3 or 4 inch aluminzed exhaust mandrel bent to shape with a K&N or S&B filter slapped on them

i had the same concerns regarding stress on the tb and plastic manifold. i had a 3" z-tube, but took it off for a home-made 4" setup when i got my f&b throttle body. i ended up putting a support bracket at the filter end of the setup. used a piece of perforated metal strapping and bent it into a "z" shape and mounted one end to a stud that was used for the factroy air box, and attached the other end to the pipe clamp holding the filter on to the tube. seems too keep the filter from moving around too much.

ps: the 3" z-tube for factory tb's is for sale. it's collecting dust right now

Art,
You are right on with your statement. An expensive price for that great sound of the old 4 bbl. You would have to have a Dyno to tell the difference from stock. But the sound is what I like and I'm of the older guys of the group.

What about just slapping a Big Mouth filter on the TB itself. Any input. Can't really be much hotter than over by the exhaust. Any input?

Except that if you move it off to the side where the factory airbox was, and remove the rubber flap on the front, you get cold air coming in that way and from the hole in the fender, plus you can build a heat shield around it. This is what I've done and it works great, keeps everything nice and cold!

Unless you are just into looks, get a K&N fipk - it is supported on the fenderwell.
