I had the exact same sympthoms, I replaced the termostat and radiator cap. I thought the trouble was still there, it still acted the same way but that turned out to be an air pocket in there from me having the system open. That's my advice, thermostat, cap and get the air out.
Good luck!

Cracked my radiator last winter, then after
replacing it I kept getting serious overheating
within 10 minutes of cranking.

After this, pressure backed uo in the system and
blew apart the fill valve (Damn you Dodge and your
plastic fill assy)... Replaced thermostat and was
still getting overheating within 10 minutes of
running that would boil over the cap.

Replaced water pump and fill assy with metal one
and damnit it still overheated... Burped system,
and it still over heated...

Observed radiator cap at time of overheat and
realized it wasnt seating fully, replaced radiator
cap and voila...

I once had a prob with my 96 Ram van running hot.
I tried replacing the fan clutch but this did not
help.

I decided the radiator was probably clogged so
replaced it with a new one. When I took the old
one out, I found a bee nest between the main
radiator and the smaller transmission cooler
radiator. The nest was restricting air flow
enough to make it run hot.

You just never know.

I have an 02 Dakota SLT 4.7L. Started having severe overheating issues around 150k mi. I added a new: low-temp Thermostat, Water Pump, Fan Clutch, Radiator, Radiator hoses and cap. Still over heated within minutes of running. initially I believed the heating was caused by the superchip I added which was running it on high idle but after returning it to stock still over heated.. had a good mechanically inclined friend of mine show me that dodge's have a bleeder valve near the front engine housing assy. just opened it and ran the truck until the bubbles stopped showing then tightened it.. truck ran cool for a few months no issues. now it's overheating again but only because I floor it every where I go and blew a head gasket. currently overhauling my V8 magnum engine. Point being, make sure you Do take care of your entire cooling system which is a lot of working parts but it avoids having to yoke your engine out in the long stretch.
