I saw a show last night that claimed that Chrysler/Dodge cars and trux have defective seat belts...There was a story of a man that was throw from his car and killed....They say that the bels relerase too easily...and they have failed all kinds of tests. It is called a Gen 3 seat belt..(Dont think it has anything to do with the GenIII Body sytle) Was wondering if anyone else heard about this...Seems to be a real saftey hazard

My wife's Plymouth Grand Voyager was serviced for a recall re: seat belt retractor replacement last year. I haven't heard anything on Dak seatbelts...

My driver's side seatbelt buckle completely fell apart('96 CC), not just the plastic housing but the internal spring assembly, etc. It's totally useless. The plastic covering on the front passsenger buckle has come off too, exposing the inner workings. I'm bucking in using the front center buckle.

I called Chrysler HQ to ask about a warranty repair or other "avoid a recall" repair but they said "no". It's $260 to repair!! The dealer (I bought it used) refuses to fix it too. I wonder, in light of this new report, if it's worth hiring a lawyer to pursue a repair. Thoughts?

I saw the story last night. I thought the test they were using was pretty bad. You could tell that they were going to be able to get it to release in the test by how far up the release button is. I looked on my 94' which doesn't have that type of seatbelt, but if it was put up to the "ball" test it would fail. My buckles haven't failed yet and thats from two seperate first hand experiences.

yeah i was watching that last night as i was poudin a few beers. I shouldn't talk since I'm in the process of becoming an engineer, but it was funny that they needed like a team of engineers to do "the ball test". haha cracks me up

The point they were making is that during that kind of accident, with the car twisting around and with your arms flailing around, the release mechanism can get hit by your hands or elbows and then, out you go!

Thant may be true, but as PSU said it doesn't take a team of engineers to roll a ball around on a seatbelt, especially in the way they were doing it. All you realy have to do is look at the offending part and say to yourself "that would fail if it was hit with my hand." Besides, if i'm in an accident my hands are no where near the buckle, They are covering my eyes :)

Dakotas are not even on the list of Chrysler vehicles that have the GenIII belts installed.
