DaveR - I bought about $125 worth of mandrel bends and spent a large portion of time with a sawzall and a welder.

I did the fab work myself so the labor was basically free.

I don't use any chemicals. I just blast it off at the quarter carwash every few weeks.

Of course I clean any part I touch whenever I disassemble anything. So the thing SHOULD be pretty clean!

You can see mine in the pics. It was made by Ractive, I'm not real impressed with it. I got my mechanic to put it on when he did my Borla, he said it was a bit of a bîtch to get it straight (there were a few faults in the braiding), but other than that, it is like that basket braid for computer cable, just push it on one end and it expands.
I was in Home Depot looking at the plumbing hose on the weekend. The steel hose for my sink & toilet are beautiful, why couldn't we adapt something like that for our daks? They don't make a true hose kit for us yet, just the sleeves.

The high blast at a car wash isn't a very good idea. Unless you don't mind waiting about an hour for the water to dry off the electrical connectors or whatever else the water gets into keeping it from starting.

I take plastic bags and elastic bands with me, once I take off the air intake, I twist a clean shop towel into the TB, then bag it, fastening securely with rubber band. I also wrap the alternator. Then I use degreaser, and a plastic dish scrubber for the gungy areas and rinse. I use the spray foam engine shampoo, which really reeks and is dangerous if you don't rinse it really well. Mother's Mag Polish is great for the aluminum tubing, headers, alternator. I even know one guy who used a dremel to polish his alternator, it looks great.

NFS - I'm not really sure about the exact HP/Tq numers at this point. The last time it was on a dyno - it was still NA. At that time it made 242 rwhp and 322 ft-lbs rwtq. I haven't had a chance to get it onto a dyno since the turbo install. It's not a V6, it's a 4.7 V8. The truck weighs 4225 lbs. and has gone as quick as 12.76 @ 107.77 mph. The online calculators that are based upon weight/ET/speed are showing a range of 370-415 RWHP or between 445 and 495 HP at the flywheel.

Hey Duner on those spring clamps what did you use to tighten them? Just a crescent or a torque wrench or what...and how far from the front of the leaf did you put em. Do you have problems w/ them sliding around? If so how did you fix the problem?

My spring clamps are right behind the factory band that straps the leaves together. I just re-tighten them occasionally if it looks like they're trying to move around. I've had them on for about 2 years now without any problems at all.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around that system of yours Duner. What exactly is the pipe pictured that ends we the large round peice that's wrapped? Also what is the pip that travels to the inlet side of the turbo from the exaust? I am also wondering how long it took you to decide on putting a turbo in? It doesn't seem like you just wake up one morning and say today I am going to put in a turbo.

Hey Dunner, I have a 2002 CC 4x4, 4.7L, w/3.92's auto, and I think your truck is awesome, I like my 4x4 and wouldn't have it any other way. My question is would it be ok to do this (the turbo and the same type of mods you have on your truck) to my truck? I like speed as much as the next guy, or girl, but I like the 4x4 option waaaayyyy too much.

DaveR - Is the large round piece you're asking about red? I think the first pipe you are talking about that ends with the large round piece that's wrapped is my blowoff valve. The red part is an outerwear on a small air filter that fits on the end of the BOV. I think the other pipe you're asking about is the vent pipe for the wastegate. It allows the wastegate to route exhaust pressure out of the system to keep the turbo from producing more boost than is wanted at the time.

As far as how long it took to decide on putting a turbo on? I had toyed with the idea all the way home from the Dakota R/T National meet in June. The National meet was held in Topeka, Kansas. That left me with about 22 hours worth of driving to think up crazy ideas. About 5 weeks before the Truckin' Nationals, I decided I wanted my truck to be quicker for the event. I spent about 2 weeks thinking about whether I wanted Nos, a blower or a turbo system. Once I decided, I had only 3 weeks left before the Truckin' Nationals to get it all completed. I got it built and installed in 2 weeks. That left me with a whole week to tweak the set-up before the race.

Clevite 77 - Thanks for the compliment on the truck! I think the mods I have done to my truck would work great on a 4x4. My truck is very docile with lower boost settings. The higher boost settings make the powerband a little touchy though. I definately wouldn't recommend hitting 10 lbs of boost while rock crawling! hehehe It could get pretty dicey on an icey road also. I run a lower boost setting for general driving and towing a trailer and it works great.

When the funds become available and the kit from SPeedtweaks comes out I would like to turbo my 4x4 also. How easy is it to control the boost you run? Are you running something similar to the Apexi AFC?

The boost is easy to control. I believe Speedtweaks is going to use a remote adjustable boost controller on their setup so you can control boost levels from the cab. I use a Deltagate wastegate with my system. It requires me to change springs and turn wrenches to make boost level changes..... but that way I can't accidently dial it up without first thinking about it.

I grasped where the wastegate is. I am talking about on the exaust side. It is a smaller diameter pipe that intersects a rather large pipe wraped insome sort of white stuff. I'm just having a hard time understanding the exaust side. I am still amazed that you did it and it seems to have some out very well. Did you do anything to beef up the transmission? Thanks for all your answers. I'm just kind of on the look out for some great project to set my tax refund towards.

The smaller diameter pipe that intersects with the large downpipe (that exits the back of the turbo) goes to the exit side of the wastegate. That's where the wastegate bleeds it's excess exhaust pressure to. I originally sprayed the metal tubing with a clearcoat to protect it from the weather. It looks white in the installed photos because the heat baked the clear and made it turn white. (poor choice on my part) It's not actually wrapped with anything. I've since repainted it all with ultra hi-temp flat black paint.

I haven't done anything to the transmission..... other than try and be somewhat careful with it. I pretty much "granny" shift it... no speed shifting at all. I also am pretty gentle with the throttle if I am towing my trailer.

Thankls for putting up with all my questions. I got the wastegate part down and understand that plumbing(i think). The part that I am talking about it the tube in the uper left corner in the pic of all the collective parts. It is the pipe pictured above the downpipe. So what I am seeing is this peice connects into the other smaler exaust pipe coming off the manifold. If I am seeing this right that then connects to some sort of collector.

Turbine Blanket
IP: Logged

Message:
Oh, I get it now. The pipe in the upper left corner is the crossover pipe that comes from the drivers side. The bigger silver thing that's laying on top of it is actually an aluminum/carbon fiber turbine blanket that helps keep the heat from the (exhaust side) turbine housing of the turbo from radiating too much heat into my poor PCM. It wasn't installed when I took the pics of the whole system installed in the truck.
