Subject: Which Dakota?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all! I'm new to the Dakota world and haven't made my purchase yet. I'm pretty set on a V-8 but I can't decide which one. Is there a big difference in availability for parts between the two? I'm looking for the small block Chevy of Dakota's. Which option has the most available parts and appearance mods for the best price?

Thanks,

Bryan

The 4.7L has but an intake and exhausts, no internal engine stuffs that I know of, unless you count the Jeep 4.7L HO switch that CW did. Maybe some parts will come out in the near future, but if Mopar's telephone line wasn't busy all day I would bother them to do something about it. R/T has a bunch of stuff to do to it and if you want to save a buck or two, you can get a older 5.2L. Or just drop something in there!

The biggest difference might be that you can only get a 5 speed with the 4.7 V8. You're stuck with a slushbox with the R/T.

The 5.2 and the 5.9 both will take the same parts and they have been using this magnum version in the Dakota since 92. The 5.9 came to the Dakota in 98 and only in the R/T or later in the Quad Cab. Before the 5.2 was replaced by the 4.7 in 2000 the 5.2 was available with a 5-speed also. I bet some 98-99 5.2, 5-speed owners would challenge all these 4.7 guys claims to be the fastest just like the R/T guys do. And actually the Gen II being a lighter truck would make the 93-97 5.2 5-speed dakotas potentially the fastest stock Dakotas and very easy to mod as well (they just don't look as good IMO). The small block 318 has been around since the 60's, that's not as old as the small block chevy, but the current version of the Dodge is much more similar to the original design then the current crop of small v-8s from chevy. Pretty much any part you can think of is available for the 5.9 right off the shelf, and probably in stock (the big thing missing now is neither the 4.7 or the 5.9 have a ready to go, bolt on turbo kit, but the 4.7 will probably get one first) The 4.7 is coming along but still is missing some basic stuff. The 4.7 comes with a better state of performance tune from the factory and doesn't really need some of the same stuff the 5.9 really responds to, but when the 5.9 gets some of those things it really wakes up.
