Subject: Synth Oil Change Intervals?
IP: Logged

Message:
I spent a half hour reading through old posts trying to find a straight answer on this and only found debate upon debate on what the "best" oil is. I am not looking to continue that on this thread:)

I am using Mobil 1 synthetic I asked the dealer if the interval between oil changes is different for synthetic and they said no. It would seem you should be able to safely go longer between oil changes with synthetic. Anyone have any sound information on this? Perhaps from another dealer or from DC?

This maybe in my owners manual but I am too comfortable in my pj's to go out and look and the question just popped in my head since my oil change this week.

I got mine changed a couple of weeks ago, they gave me a "reminder sticker" for the next change, which is mid May. Oh, I've got Mobil 1 too.

I would think you probably could go longer but you should change the filter at the 3k mark. I'm just going to change everything at 3k.

The remote dual filter setup seems to be the way to go for the ultimate in filtering and motor protection. However mounting space is very limited in our Daks:(

Sorry, 2THEXTRM, this probably wasn't much help for you but I was thinking of this issue for a while also.

There is no specific (time) to do an oil change,it all depends on what you do with your truck and where you drive it and how you drive it,I dont have far to drive anywhere I go, my truck is a year and 2 months old and only has 9400 killometers on it,I change oil and filter every 6 months and everyones driving situation is different

Your best bet is to follow the service interval in your owners manual for the style of driveing you do. If the synthetic oil company you use supports extended drain intervals like Amsoil and Redline then I would go for it!! Last I checked Mobile 1 was not endorseing extended drain intervals. If ever you have warranty issues the car you would be lamb for the slaughter with out the backing and support of the oil company. If you want to do extended drain intervals go with a company that will back you up. The real issue is about filtration of contaminets and additive life cycle. The oil breaks down very little!

Can anyone tell me how many miles of "break-in" I should have before switching over to synthetic? I've read everthing from 100 miles to 5,000 on this board. Thanks!

My Ancient Dak has 90000 miles on it.. is it too late to switch to synthetic? I've always used non-synthetic Havoline oil in it.

Thanks

You should have at least 5000 miles on the engine before attempting to switch to synthetic,so be patient and use the best petroleum oil and filter you can in the meantime, and change your filter every 2000 miles, unless you use a high-end filter with a longer service interval. And for gods sake stay away from FRAM filters, they clog faster than any of the others, except maybe the X2,and even that one I`m leery of.

Synthetic is by far a superior oil it keeps its viscosity level longer thus providing cooler engine parts and a better barrier of protection longer. HOWEVER it still becomes contaiminated by moisture and acides from gases produced by combustion. Therfore keep your regular scheduled oil changes for absoulute peak protection.

You know alot of "NEW" cars and trucks come from the factory with synthetic fluids! GM seems to think that synthetic oil is ok in new trucks, corvette and cadilac!Porsche, BMW and AMG Mercedes also like synthetics right from the factory! I normal switch to syntetics at my first oil change around 600-900 miles. I have never had a problem. Alot of custom engine builder will void any warranty they might have if you use anything other then synthetic in their engines! Amsoil recommends 5000 miles for proper break in but few other still follow this. There used to be rumors that your engine would not break in if you ran synthetics from the get go. If you realy want to you will not hurt anything buy waiting until you have 5000 if you want to aire on the side of caution! They want you to wait to make sure your rings are properly seated and that you cam and lifters are also worn in.There was also problems in the early 1970's with cylinder glazeing with old synthetics used in unbroken in engines. I have not seen any of these things with modern synthetic oil.
