Subject: Rear Bumper Question

Message:
Before I ask this, YES I did check the owners manual, and YES I did you a search in the archives here first, so please don't flame for wasting anybody's time.

Now that's off my chest ...

I have a '01 QC 4x4. I noticed the other day, after taking off the tailgate, that there is a round pipe-like thing, about 2" in diameter, between the bumper-frame mounts, about 18" long. It rotates preety freely, but is damped after about 30deg of rotation to either direction (forward or rearward of the truck). It's basically impossible to see with the tailgate on, and is quite apparent with it off.

Anyway, just wondering if anybody know what this thing is? Seems too small to really be a damper for anything that happens at the back of the truck, but I can't think of anything else it might be.

Can anybody shed some light?

Thanks,

OgreBoy

PS: The body shop had to take mine off when they put my rollpan on- the guy at the shop said he figured it was nothing but a weight- it is heavy- about as heavy as the OEM bumper if you could believe that.

Been waiting for someone else to ask this question. Didn't want to let on I don't know, but
I suspect its some sort of vibration dampener.
Could take it off and see what happens.

Something was posted on this topic several months back if my feable memory serves me correctly. It is some sort of anti vibration or anti harmonic device attached to the frame and is found only on the QC models. Someone with a better memory may have more info on the subject than I.

You are right FM, Dodge calls it a balance piston. It is only on the Quad Cabs. An explanation fron Dodge was that it dampened vibrations and noises from the small bed. I haven't noticed any problem since I removed it for my roll pan.
