Subject: 2.2l turbo dakota trans leak

I have 100 miles on the new turbo in my 87 2.2L turbo EFI converted dakota. It just started leaking oil from the 5 speed case.

There is a machined hole on the pass side about 5 inches in front of the ass end of the tranny. It is on the side and pointing diagonaly down towards the bottom of the trans.

What was supose to be in this hole? Just a plug?

It looks like a dipstick hole for a 5" dipstick maybe, but i dont remember ever seeing one on the trans before.

any ideas?

I can't help you on the tranny, but I have to ask
how does the turbo setup work in that truck? Often contemplated that. Love those 2.2L turbos.

The truck origonally had a carburated 2.2L and a pluged radiater i didnt know about. Blew a hole in # 1 piston 40 miles from home.

The truck never had power back then. The stock turbo pieces from the FWD dodges dont fit well if at all. I made both a custom manifolds and a modified newer throtle body to accept the older AIS motor. I have to say it runs better then i assumed it would. I have a 2001 4.7 V8 dakota as well, and the turbo is faster and has much more top end then the v8. But the v8 is heavier and has a fiberglass cap and extended cab as well.

I wish the 87 was in better shape. Im going to end up selling it or piecing out the turbo setup. As i dont have room for it, and have to get going on my omni RWD conversion.

If ya have the know how and a good aluminum capabble TIG welder, the turbo swap isnt to bad. The hardest thing was the electrical for the EFI.

the truck is on my web site below. New pics to come

if this hole is threaded its sounds like the acces hole for the detent balls. you dont want to lose them.

No threads in the hole. Its a 3/8" hole thats machined smooth or rather just drilled. I found some 3/8" plastic pnumatic bulkhead plugs at work that I plugged the hole with. Drives fine yet, but still curious what came out of the hole?

sorry it took so long got rather busy today. i got a look at mine. i'm sure of what that is now. that is the vent/breather hole. it should have a brether cap on it which just slides in. the breater allows moisture to exscape and also pressures from when everyhing warms up. you should be able to get the part from a dealer.

there is a breather cap about 4 inches above the hole in question. the breather cap is centered on the top of the case.

The hole in question is on the pass side of the case, going diagonally down into the case.

i see what you are talking about now. you said you made a plug for the hole? thats all it is. theres a rubber plug on mine. so you should be fine with what you did.

Thanks for crawling under yours and checking for me.

I wonder if it just vibrated loose after all the milage and the clutch replacement. May have knocked it loose, But that was 10,000 miles ago?

Oh well.

Thanks again.

Dude that is one Cool Truck!! I love the Omni as well. Just look at my name. I have a lot of questions about the truck. The motor I assume it came out of a Turbo car right? What about tranny how did that mount up? Man it would be awesome if you could email with the specifics.
Thanks
