Subject: Oil Pressure Fix??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 Dak with a V6 and lately if everyone is familiar with the oil pressure guage right after it has warmed up it has a tendancy to stay right on the minimum oil pressure and about half the time it drops half-way to the minimum reading and out of the "acceptable range." It also has very little movement while driving no matter the revs. I'm not very wise automotively and thought a new oil pump would be a fix. But after talking to the local shop I patronize I've been told that it won't do anything and what I really need to do is use thicker oil(10W40 winter, 20W50 Summer) or replace the rods and mains I believe. Is this accurate?

Note: Right now as far as I know the oil pump is stock, I have a Melling High-flow pump and the truck has 121K miles.

What the heck would rods and main bearings have to do with oil pressure? The bearings maybe... ah, do the oil pump if you've already got one to put in it. It's not hard to do, and at 121,000 miles, it can't hurt it any!

Does the truck burn oil? Low compression? Leak it? If it's not doing that, then chances are you don't need new rods and mains :0)

I had a similar problem around 150k.Thicker oil will not help, I use 15w40.Returning home one evening, my oil pressure warning light came on and stayed on. Fortunatley I was 2 blocks from home and I crept home at idle. The cure was a melling high volume oil pump for the 318-360,it works. I replaced it myself in the driveway, the oil pan was a fight. There were no metal shavings in the pickup screen so I have to assume the pressure relief for the pump failed. Now the gauge is medium high range (now 163k). I replaced the sender first before the pump but when you turn off the engine and hear the sound of hot metal clicking, it's not a sender. If your truck has this pump installed try a different brand of oil filter.

About the clicking I am a little unclear. If the truck clicks after you shut it off what does that mean is it the pump or is that normal
I am a little confused.

First of all if your worried about oil pressure you have to verify what your oil pressure is by using a oil pressure guage, your stock gauge could be faulty or the sending unit, verify the numbers first

I agree with arts advice. First check with seperate pressure guage. Once you know for sure that the pressure is low I would set out fix it. You have two choices the shot gun aproach wich is to replace the mains bears and if you have the time the rod bearins and the oil pump at the same time. The alternative is to use some plastiguage to measure main bearing clearance and a feeler guage to measure pump gear clearance and replace what ever is worn. If you decide to replace pump you might as well replace the drive gear for it. Hope this helps!!!!

The clicking you are hearing are the lifters pumping down ..... the plunger being pushed back in since there is no pressure anymore...... as for the low pressure.... in the oil pump there is a spring and plunger that relieves too much pressure from the system ... I have been told that the spring gets week and lets the plunger open too soon or even get stuck a little open ... id replace the pump with a high volume one and see if it helps

I have a 1995 suburban with 160,000 the oil pressure at startup is 50 pounds. About 15 minutes driving its down to 20-25 pounds at idle its jumping up and down sometim,es it will kick the warning light on the truck runs like a dream dont smoke has a small rear main leak. About 1 qt leak every 3,000 miles. I always run castrol gtx 20w50 cahnged the oil in it this time went to valvoline max life???? I live in tenn is the 20w50 to heavy for winter? but the heavy oil brings the oil pressure up. Is the valvoline a good choice??? I use a fram tough gaurd filter. The truck when you let it set for 3 or 4 days at startup it taps somewhat any advice would be helpful. Should I pullm the engine or what I hate to pull it and it running so good but I want it to be dependable. Seems like when I took iot out today it was louder than normal with the max life should I get it out the truck????

Perry, Your main problem is that it's a Chevy. Sell it immediatley and buy a Dodge. That should take care of most of your problems.JK. The reason the truck "taps" when it has sat idle for awhaile is that it takes awhile to pump that thick oil up to the top of the engine and your lifters are dry. I wouldn't run 20W50 any time of the year, but especially in the winter. In modern engines, sludge is a big problem. Your oil channels are probably partially plugged. Find a shop that has a flush machine and get the engine flushed. Have them replace the pump when they do the flush. They have to remove the pan anyway.

Wow, have some of you ever rebuilt an auto engine before? I guess so or you wouldn't be giving advice, right?

How exactly does thicker oil bring the pressure up in a system?

Is it because it stays in the journals longer and causes back-'pressure' seen on the gauge?

somebodys principle, I think it was Bernoulli, low flow = high pressure.
