Subject: Changing my transmission fluid.
IP: Logged

Message:
As my clutch is sticky going into first, and sometimes second. My tranny fluid is probbaly old. Seeing as how the truck was traded in at almost 60K, and I haven't read the service report of what they did to her when she came in. I'm betting they didn't change the fluid at 60K as per the maintence schdule.

So ow do I check the fluid level, and what would you recomend I put in her?

Nick, provided things haven't changed since my model on the NV3500, you will need a 17mm allen head wrench (can get one from Sears). On the passenger side, there are two allen head bolts. The one on the side is the fill plug, the one at or near the bottom is the drain. Take the fill plug out and stick your finger in, the fluid should be level with the fill plug. If not, you are low.

To put new fluid in, drain the old stuff by removing the allen head bolt on the bottom (implied task is draining it into a bucket or something similiar). Once empty, put the drain plug back in and clean the tranny with degreaser/brake cleaner from the mess you just made. Now, either pump in new synthetic 10W-30 (which is goes in the transmission) or contort yourself and a funnel and pour it in. Once the fluid is level with the fill plug opening, put the plug back in and clean your mess again. While under their, make sure your vent hose is not plugged and you have no other leaks.
