1999 Dak Club Cab 5.2 Auto 3.55 Rear. Any Thoughts about towing a 6 x 12 enclosed cargo trailer with motorcycles in it total weight 3,000 lbs. I live in Canada and Iam headed down to the good o'l U.S.A. to enjoy your nice weather down in florida. I have instald a tranny cooler but was wandering about using overdrive or drive. It pulls fine in O/D as long there isn't a strong head wind then it slows down because my trailer is about 7.5' tall. It seems to rev quite high in drive about 2600 rpm going 60 mph is this to much rev? The trip should take about 17 hrs each way. I think Im gona see what this Dodge is made of. Maybee I need that big Ford F 250 with the 7.3 turbo diesel. Ha ha ha I wish.

Mike,

I hauled a 5' 8" trailer loaded with furniture, and a bed full of stuff, from Michigan to Florida. All I have is a 3.9L 5-speed with the 3.55 rear end. I ran 4th gear across most of Kentucky and Tenessee at 80mph (equated to 3500ish RPM). Besides sucking down the gas, the truck didn't care much. I just couldn't hold overdrive going up hill :0)

Temp gauge never went up higher than normal, made the trip in about 17 hours I figure. Only thing I didn't like was the braking. The darned thing did -not- want to stop with that trailer on it, I should have opted for a slightly larger one with brakes on it I guess.

I don't think they recommend towing in OD.

I have a 2001 3.9L 4x4 with the 3.92 rear end and I pull a 19 foot ski boat alot during the summer. Definately keep it out of overdrive, will keep your tranny from shifting more than it needs too. I have the Heavy Duty service group and the heavy duty towing group so I have no worries about towing just about anything.

Good to know, because I have the same heavy duty/towing group. Although I don't have a 4x4.

you would be ok driving to Florida. Just don't drive in OD. You will tear up the tranny not to mention the ass end. I have pulled a 24' baja from Syracuse to Alexandria bay numerous times and it did fine. and besides if my 96 s10 2wd with a 4.3 could pull 2 sea-doos and a motorcycle in the bed from new york to myrtle beach, you should be ok.

I pull a camper about 1000 lbs. heavier and a lot more air drag - no problem. Different auto tranny though, do you have the heavier duty auto ( I think heavy duty has a bump out on the pan like the old 727) ? Sounds like you really plan on flying. I have same gears in 9 1/4 rear, If you have 8 1/4 rear (you don't say) I'd take it a little easier. I did Ft. Lauterdale to Amherst, MA in 20 hours once and we were really moving. I'll bet you're doing Datona, further north, But you're starting further north. Try to beat my time and you might be looking to get locked up (yeah I'm jelous). No problem with motor, just watch tranny and rear if you don't have the heavy duty stuff. Have fun !
